Will Anyone Stop To Help This Veteran Board The Bus?

  • 3 min read

The Wheels Turn Against the Curb

The veteran’s rubber tires scraped against the wet concrete of the bus stop as he gripped the hand rims. His knuckles turned white against the black metal, his shoulders hunched forward under the weight of his camouflage jacket. Pedestrians in dark coats hurried past him on the sidewalk, their eyes fixed straight ahead. Nobody slowed their pace. Nobody turned their head to look down at the man in the wheelchair.

He stopped rolling and lifted his chin toward the city bus idling by the curb. The blue vehicle hissed as its pneumatic doors remained shut, the driver peering out through the side window. The veteran stared at the open door of the bus, his lips parting slightly as he waited for a signal. Commuters stepped around his front casters, avoiding eye contact with the empty space where his legs should have been.

The Driver Steps Into the Rain

The bus driver pushed his window wider and leaned his forearms against the metal frame. His eyes locked onto the veteran sitting alone in the cold wind, watching the steady stream of people walking past him. The driver pulled his arm back inside the cabin, unlatched his seat belt, and stood up from the driver’s seat. He walked down the narrow aisle toward the front doors.

The hydraulic doors slid open with a sharp mechanical thud. The driver stepped down onto the wet sidewalk, leaving the steering wheel behind. He walked directly toward the wheelchair, his hands extended outward with palms open. The veteran stopped gripping his wheels, his gaze shifting upward as the driver approached his side.

A Bridge Across the Gap

The driver lowered his head and spoke in a low voice, gesturing toward the low-slung platform of the bus. The veteran nodded once, his jaw tightening before he released a soft breath. The driver walked to the side control panel and pressed his finger against the silver button. The metal ramp unfolded smoothly from beneath the doorway, sliding outward until it rested flat against the concrete curb.

The veteran placed his palms firmly against the rubber tires and pushed forward. The driver walked backward ahead of the wheelchair, keeping his hands hovering just inches from the handles. The heavy wheels rolled up the slanted metal platform, guided safely across the threshold. The driver stepped inside behind the wheelchair, reaching out to secure the safety locks on the floor.

A Quiet Journey Forward

The veteran rolled his chair into position facing the front of the empty bus. The driver walked back to his seat and settled behind the steering wheel as the doors hissed shut. The bus pulled away from the curb and merged into the flow of traffic on the wet avenue. The veteran sat in his secured seat, looking toward the front windshield as the city lights blurred past the glass.
