Why This Graduating Senior Walked Up To The School Custodian

  • 2 min read

The Faded Paper in the Hallway

The man’s thumb pressed against the corner of a folded sheet of notebook paper while blue lockers stretched behind him in the hallway. Tears traced lines through the gray stubble on his cheeks as his eyes scanned the handwritten lines. He stood alone in his work shirt, holding the paper with both hands.

A young man in a blue graduation cap and gold stole walked up to him. The student stopped inches away and looked down at the older man’s face.

The Words That Stopped Time

The student’s lower lip trembled as he spoke directly to the custodian. Tears welled in the young man’s eyes while he reached a hand toward his own chest. He told the man that nobody else had noticed when he was struggling.

The older man blinked rapidly, his jaw tightening as he listened. He dropped his gaze for a second before looking back up into the graduate’s eyes. He explained softly that he only wanted to give him a chance.

An Unbreakable Bond

The student stepped forward and wrapped his arms tightly around the custodian’s shoulders. The older man buried his face against the blue graduation gown, his eyes closing tight. He lifted one hand and rested it flat against the back of the student’s neck.

The custodian pulled back slightly, his chin quivering as he whispered that no one had ever thanked him like this. The student turned toward a microphone in front of a crowded gymnasium. He called the custodian out by name in front of the entire audience while applause echoed off the walls. The custodian wiped a tear from his eye with the back of his hand, watching from the floor as the crowd cheered.

Send this to someone who has been there for you when nobody else was.
