The Heavy Handfuls at the Produce Aisle
The elderly woman’s thin fingers curled around a single red apple, lifting it from the display to inspect its skin before dropping it into a clear plastic bag. She wore a knitted beige cap pulled low over her forehead and a heavy, worn coat that swallowed her frame as she sat slumped in a chrome wheelchair. Behind her, a tattooed man pushed a cart down the supermarket aisle, his dark t-shirt revealing inked sleeves as he watched her every movement.
He slowed his pace to match hers, his eyes dropping to the canvas tote bag resting on the arm of her wheelchair. A quiet murmur passed between them as he reached down, his fingers sliding smoothly into the side pouch of her bag and pulling out a black wallet.
The Empty Wallet by the Shelves
The man walked a few paces away, his fingers flipping the leather open to reveal crisp bills tucked inside. He pulled a single note free, slid the wallet shut, and tucked it back into his own pocket before turning his gaze toward the checkout counters ahead. The fluorescent lights glinted off the metal shelving units as he stood alone in the aisle, clutching the small black object.
Up at the register, the cashier scanned the bag of apples and handed the plastic handles across the counter. The woman reached inside her large tote bag, her fingers rummaging through the depths of fabric while the cashier waited with a smile.
The Tightened Jaw at the Register
The woman’s hand stopped moving inside the bag. She pulled her fingers out, pressed her palms against her face, and bowed her head as her shoulders shook with silent realization. Her chin dropped toward her chest, and she stared down at the counter with wide, unblinking eyes.
The cashier leaned forward, her expression softening as she watched the woman’s hands tremble in her lap. Nobody spoke in the aisle, the only sound coming from the low hum of the refrigeration units lining the back wall. The woman lifted her gaze toward the register display, her fingers clutching the edge of the counter.
The Turned Head at the Exit
The man walked up to the register, placing the black wallet onto the stainless steel surface between them. He offered a quiet word to the cashier, his jaw set and his arms relaxed at his sides as he turned and walked toward the store exit.
The cashier slid the wallet across the counter toward the woman in the wheelchair. The woman picked it up, flipped it open, and stared at the green bills tucked inside before looking up with wide, wet eyes.
