A Discarded Toy On The Curb
The boy rolled the miniature toy car between his fingers against the cracked pavement. His bare feet rested in the street dust beside a dented tin can and an old canvas bag.
Footsteps echoed between the weathered brick facades behind him. A tall figure in a tailored black overcoat and a towering dark cap strode down the narrow alley.
The boy stopped rolling his toy and lifted his arm, offering the small car outward toward the approaching man. A faint smile touched the boy’s dusty cheeks as he extended his palm.
The man paused on the sidewalk and reached down with a gloved hand. He took the miniature vehicle from the boy’s grip, inspected it for a fraction of a second, and threw it over his shoulder onto the cobblestones.
The plastic wheels clicked against the curb and settled in the dirt. The boy’s lower jaw dropped, his shoulders slumping as his eyes followed the discarded toy.
An Outstretched Hand In The Alley
The stranger did not walk away. He extended his right hand straight down, opening his palm toward the boy sitting in the dust.
The boy looked at the open hand, then glanced back toward the wall. Slowly, he raised his own arm and placed his palm into the stranger’s grip.
The man closed his fingers around the boy’s wrist and lifted him up to his feet in one smooth pull. The tin collection cup and the worn sack stayed behind on the curb.
Side by side, they began walking down the cracked stone street. The boy’s bare soles slapped quietly against the pavement beside the man’s polished black boots.
Every few paces, the boy turned his chin straight upward, tracking the tall collar and sharp posture of the man holding his hand.
The Vertical Door
They rounded the corner toward the main avenue where a low, matte-grey supercar sat parked parallel to the curb. The sleek panels of the car reflected the overcast sky overhead.
The man came to a stop and placed a firm palm against the boy’s ragged shirt. He turned the boy toward the vehicle, gesturing at the sharp angles of the bodywork.
Reaching toward the hidden latch, the man lifted the door upwards toward the sky. It rose vertically on hydraulic struts, exposing the sculpted black interior within.
The boy took a half-step back, his mouth hanging wide open. He pointed one finger toward the open cabin, looking back and forth between the seat and the driver.
The man stepped back and opened his hand toward the interior. The boy lifted one bare foot over the wide carbon-fiber threshold and lowered himself into the deep bucket seat.
Down The City Street
The boy gripped the edges of the stitched leather bolster with both hands as the door swung down and latched shut. He leaned forward, running his fingers across the digital dashboard controls.
The man seated himself behind the wheel, took hold of the leather rim, and pressed down on the pedal. The motor fired with a low rumble that vibrated through the floorboards.
The boy pressed his back flat into the leather cushions, his cheeks lifting into a wide grin as his hands gripped the edge of his torn shorts. His head swung from side to side, taking in the passing apartment buildings through the passenger window.
The low-slung grey car angled away from the curb and entered the middle lane of traffic. Its angular red taillights flared bright as the vehicle accelerated down the tree-lined avenue, disappearing past the storefronts and sidewalk cafes.
