A Stolen Reflection In The Shadows
Wrinkled fingers tilted a glass vial of swirling blue liquid past cracked, dry lips. The fluid burned bright, illuminating dusty shelves stacked with aged animal skulls, bundled herbs, and glass jars. Within seconds, a ring of pulsing white energy erupted from the center of the wooden room, swallowing the hunched figure in pure light.
When the flare receded, smooth porcelain skin and dark flowing hair stood in place of the crone. The woman adjusted the lace sleeves of an ivory wedding dress, brushing her fingertips against the diamond tiara resting against her veil. She tilted her head back and let out a sharp laugh that echoed across the stone floor.
A few feet away in a heavy oak chair, the true bride sat bound from shoulders to ankles. Thick hemp rope bit into the silk embroidery of her skirt, holding her wrists tightly against her lap. The imposter leaned forward, brushing a lock of dark hair away from the prisoner’s cheek with a mocking grin.
The duplicate turned on her heel and glided out the door, her train whispering against the rough wood planks as she departed for the ceremony.
Unraveling Coils In The Workshop
Inside the locked room, the bound captive pulled against the knots around her wrists. The rough fibers scratched her skin, but the bindings remained firm against the wooden rungs of the high-backed chair. Her breathing quickened as she glanced toward the small high window on the stone wall.
A pair of brown paws gripped the sill, followed by the inquisitive face of a small monkey. The creature dropped silently onto the cluttered workbench, scattering loose scrolls and glass bottles before scampering across the floorboards. It clambered directly onto the bride’s lap, chattering quietly as its small fingers dug into the tight knots binding her forearms.
With deliberate tugs, the animal loosened the thick coils one loop at a time. The outer wraps fell slack, sliding down over her white lace sleeves onto the chair cushions. The young woman wrenched her hands free, reaching down immediately to unravel the cords holding her boots to the lower chair legs.
She sprang to her feet, scanning the workbench until her eyes landed on a duplicate glass flask filled with glowing azure liquid. Grasping the heavy bottle by its neck, she sprinted toward the door.
Two Identical Brides At The Altar
At the center of the cathedral, golden candlelight flickered across rows of carved wooden pews. The groom stepped toward the imposter at the altar rail, extending his hands to take hers. Behind them, the priest raised an open leather-bound book to deliver the final blessing.
Their lips leaned toward one another, barely inches apart, before a sudden shout broke through the vaulted hall. Both heads snapped toward the center aisle, where heavy wooden doors stood wide open. Guests turned in their seats, gasping as an identical woman in the exact same bridal gown strode toward the sanctuary.
The groom dropped his hands, stumbling back a step onto the carpeted platform as his eyes darted between the two matching faces. The imposter spun around, her mouth tightening into a thin line as her double approached with the blue potion held high. Both women pointed accusing fingers, each shouting that the other was a fraud.
The real bride did not pause her stride. Pulling her arm back, she uncorked the glass vessel and hurled the blue fluid straight into the imposter’s face.
Smoke And Rose Petals
The shimmering liquid splashed across the duplicate’s veil and chest, leaving bright turquoise stains that immediately began to hiss. The imposter clutched her cheeks, staggering backward as thick billows of white vapor poured from her gown. Within the cloud, her smooth skin cracked and shriveled, the young form melting away to reveal the ragged clothing and gray strands of the elderly witch.
The witch screamed, throwing her arms into the air as the white cloud turned to twisting plumes of pitch-black smoke. A sudden vortex pulled the dark vapor upward toward the vaulted rafters, dissolving her figure into empty air until only faint soot remained on the sanctuary carpet.
The groom stood motionless with his palms raised, staring at the empty space before turning slowly to face the woman standing with the empty bottle. He lowered his arms and stepped down from the platform, closing the distance between them with open hands.
The couple clasped each other by the waist and shoulders, meeting in a deep embrace before the altar as red rose petals drifted down from the ceiling amidst sparkling sprays of light.
