An Unexpected Tug in the Deep Snow
A massive black bear stepped onto its hind legs beside an idling pickup truck, clamping its jaws firmly around the sleeve of a man’s dark winter jacket.
The man in the orange beanie kept his boots planted in the fresh snow, his hands held open at his hips as the animal pulled backward. The bear released the heavy fabric, turned its bulk around, and shuffled straight toward the concrete barrier flanking the canal.
Instead of ducking inside his cab, the driver followed the bear’s heavy tracks along the narrow snowbank. Each time he slowed his pace, the bear glanced back over its shoulder, waiting for him to close the distance.
Peering Over the Concrete Ledge
The bear stopped at the edge of the angled retaining wall, lowering its snout toward the dark, rushing water below.
The man stepped up beside the animal, leaning his upper body forward to inspect the drop. Two small black paws were hooked into a thin ridge of concrete just inches above the freezing surface.
A tiny bear cub was clinging upright against the vertical wall, shivering as the current lapped against its hind paws. Its ears were flattened, its wet fur matted against the cold stone, unable to scramble up the steep incline to reach its mother.
The mother bear paced along the rim, shifting her weight from paw to paw while watching the man’s hands.
Reaching Down to the Waterline
The man kicked the snow clear beneath his boots and dropped flat onto his stomach on the frozen concrete.
He slid his torso over the rim, letting his head and shoulders hang downward into the canal. His jacket scraped against the abrasive stone as he stretched his fingers toward the stranded youngster.
With the mother bear standing upright directly above his legs, the man hooked his fingers under the cub’s forelegs. The young bear gripped tightly to the sleeve of his coat, kicking its feet away from the surging water.
He pulled backward with his elbows, dragging his chest across the snowpack to lever the wet cub up over the lip. The small bear tumbled onto the snowy bank, shaking icy spray from its back.
A Quiet Reunion on the Riverbank
The mother bear lowered her head immediately, pressing her nose against the cub’s muzzle and sniffing its wet coat.
The small cub pushed its forehead against her cheek, stepping between her front legs as the man pushed himself up onto his knees. He wiped slush from his jacket and stood watching the two animals press their faces together.
The mother turned slowly toward the tree line, nudging the cub forward with her snout. The two dark shapes walked side by side along the snowy rim of the canal, disappearing into the evergreen forest as the truck’s engine rumbled in the background.
