Wings Spread Across the Asphalt
A pair of dark, feathered wings snapped open wide, blocking the middle of the paved park lane.
Underneath that protective arch, a tiny yellow gosling sat belly-down on the rough road surface, motionless.
Just a few yards away in the grass, the rest of the brood huddled by the curb, watching.
The adult goose stretched its black neck forward, pumping its chest and letting out sharp, rhythmic honks at anything approaching.
Jogging down the gentle curve of the lakeside road, a woman in grey running gear slowed her stride to a walk.
She planted her white running shoes against the pavement, lowering her arms to waist height with open palms facing forward.
Hands Reaching Past the Hiss
“Easy, I’m trying to help,” she whispered, leaning forward while keeping her shoulders low.
The goose didn’t retreat an inch.
Instead, the large bird lunged forward on webbed feet, wings flapping with loud thumps against the cool morning air.
A sharp bill thrust within inches of the runner’s shins, hissing to drive her back.
The woman pulled her torso back slightly, waiting out the flurry without turning away.
When the bird tucked its neck back into a striking coil, she sank her weight into a deep squat.
She moved her hands in slow, deliberate arcs toward the tiny ball of down feathers sitting on the stone.
The goose charged again, batting its primary feathers directly across her wrists.
Rather than pulling back, she kept her fingers steady, cupping her palms beneath the chick’s warm belly and tiny paddle feet.
Carrying the Baby Over the Curb
Her fingers closed softly around the chick’s sides, lifting it free from the coarse asphalt.
“I’ve got you,” she murmured, rising slowly back onto two feet.
The mother goose wheeled around instantly, tail feathers bobbing as she matched the runner’s stride step for step.
The bird stayed glued to the back of the woman’s calves, neck craned high to keep eyes locked on the baby in her hands.
Stepping up over the raised concrete curb, the runner moved onto the soft clover lawn.
The five waiting goslings turned in unison, chirping softly as the runner knelt down into the turf.
She lowered her hands to the grass line, slowly parting her palms.
The small chick scrambled forward on yellow feet, tumbling directly into the cluster of downy siblings.
Walking Back to the Water
The mother goose hurried past the runner’s knees, tucking the stray chick into the middle of the group.
The woman straightened up, stepping back a couple paces to give the family room.
“There you go,” she said softly, watching the little tails twitch as they reorganized into a tidy file.
With all six chicks assembled shoulder-to-shoulder, the goose turned her back to the road.
The line of goslings trotted through the green grass toward the wide oak tree by the water, trailing directly behind their mother’s tail.
