Driver Follows A Frantic Wild Monkey Toward A Dangerous Cliff Edge

  • 2 min read

An Urgent Dash Into the Timber

The adult macaque sprang straight up off the wet asphalt, all four limbs lifting off the road before it pivoted and bolted into the ferns.

Its grey coat disappeared beneath the dripping fronds, carving a quick tunnel through the undergrowth alongside the parked pickup truck.

Footsteps hurried behind the animal, pressing through thick moss and wet soil as the tree canopy blocked out the sky.

The monkey did not stop to look back, leaping over exposed cedar roots and dodging low branches with rapid, purposeful strides.

The Edge of the Ravine

The ground leveled off abruptly where the soil ended and a sheer rock face dropped into a roaring canyon.

Dozens of feet below, turquoise mountain runoff churned against jagged grey boulders, throwing mist into the damp air.

Right at the lip of the drop-off, tiny brown fingers clung to a patch of wet moss clinging to the stone.

A tiny infant monkey hung over the drop, its small body shivering as loose dirt crumbled under its hind feet.

The adult monkey paced the upper moss bank, chattering with bared teeth while keeping its gaze locked directly on the ledge.

Reaching Over the Drop

A long wooden pole slid forward through the ferns, angling downward over the vertical cliff wall.

The smooth tip hovered inches from the infant’s face, tapping gently against the stone to offer a secure purchase.

Tiny pink palms released the crumbling moss one by one and clamped around the circumference of the wood.

The baby monkey pulled itself upward, wrapping both arms and its mouth around the timber shaft to anchor its weight.

As the pole lifted inch by inch, the mother lunged forward onto her belly at the rim of the chasm.

Her arm shot down, her weathered fingers curling firmly around the baby’s scruff to haul it over the grassy crest.

Gathered to Safety

The mother scooped the shivering infant straight into her chest, wrapping both forearms around its back.

The baby buried its face into the thick, dry grey fur at her throat, its small fingers clutching tightly at her side.

She pressed her chin over the infant’s head, lowering her eyelids as she pulled the baby upward into a tight, sheltering cradle above the gorge.
