A Cruel Prank In The Backyard
A hand reached forward from the edge of the circle and yanked the long brown wig clean off the girl’s scalp.
Her right hand snapped instantly to her bare head, fingers splaying across smooth skin in pure disbelief. She stood holding a paper coffee cup with both hands, her eyes wide and fixed on the grass in front of her.
Behind her, five teenagers broke into sharp bursts of laughter, pointing fingers and tilting their heads back against the wooden fence. Not a single person stepped forward to hand the hairpiece back. She lowered her chin, squeezed her eyelids shut against hot tears, and turned on her heel to sprint away from the patio.
Finding Shelter In Familiar Arms
Her worn sneakers hit the cracked suburban asphalt as she ran down the center of an empty residential street. Her oversized flannel shirt billowed behind her in the overcast air, tears streaming unchecked across her flushed cheeks.
She did not slow her pace until she reached an unkempt backyard where an older man in a faded baseball cap was pushing a lawnmower through tall weeds. The moment the mower sputtered to a halt, she collided with his chest, burying her face into his grease-smudged gray shirt.
His thick arms closed around her shoulders, pulling her against him as she shook with heavy, gasping sobs. He rested his chin gently against the top of her bare head, rocking slightly side to side as the drone of neighborhood traffic faded into the background.
An Unexpected Arrival At The Back Porch
A short while later, she sat curled on the weathered wooden steps of the back porch, her elbows resting on her torn denim knees. Her father sat directly across from her on a rusted metal folding chair, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees to speak softly while she wiped her damp cheeks with the back of her sleeve.
He pushed himself up from the chair and took two slow steps toward the yard as quiet voices carried over the fence line. Five young people were walking through the overgrown grass, moving shoulder-to-shoulder in knit beanies pulled low over their foreheads.
They stopped a few paces from the steps, forming an unbroken row facing the porch. Nobody spoke a word.
Together, all five raised their hands to the brims of their caps and pulled the knit fabric straight up into the air. Beneath the beanies, every single head was shaved clean down to the skin, pale and smooth in the afternoon light.
Running Together Across The Open Field
Fresh tears spilled down her face, but the corners of her mouth trembled and curved upward into a wide, open smile. Her shoulders dropped their tension as laughter finally broke through her breathing.
She leaped up from the porch steps, pivoted toward the field, and sprinted through the tall grass with her arms pumping freely. Her five friends matched her stride instantly, grinning and running directly behind her across the open lawn.
