Pausing at the Glass
An elderly man in torn canvas shorts clasped his wife’s hand as they stopped in front of the illuminated boutique window. He shifted his weight on worn shoes and looked up at the tiered white gown displayed on the pedestal.
His lips moved softly as he spoke into her ear, leaning his shoulder against hers. Beside him, she held her cloth bag against her side and tilted her face toward the delicate lace draping from the mannequin’s shoulders.
Inside the warm, amber-lit showroom, a woman in a fitted black suit looked up from her desk. She set her pen down flat on an open ledger, pushed back her chair, and smoothed the front of her jacket.
An Unexpected Invitation
The shopkeeper walked past the rows of ivory satin and pushed the heavy glass front door open. Stepping out onto the damp pavement, she approached the couple and came to a stop beside them.
She offered a soft greeting and motioned toward the lit doorway behind her. The elderly man turned his head slowly, his fingers tightening gently around his wife’s weathered hand.
The boutique owner stepped aside, gesturing inward toward the carpeted entryway. The husband guided his partner past the threshold, both taking measured, quiet steps over the polished wooden floor.
Stepping Onto the Platform
Racks of flowing silk and crystal beads lined the path as they walked further into the fitting area. The woman in black walked beside them, keeping an open stance and guiding them toward the dressing suites at the back of the studio.
When the curtain opened again, the tattered clothing was gone. The elderly woman stepped onto the round wooden viewing platform wearing an intricate, long-sleeved lace wedding dress that fell to the floor in soft folds.
Across from her stood her husband, wearing a fitted black tuxedo, a crisp white shirt, and a dark tie. He paused two feet away, his chin trembling slightly before he lifted both hands and reached out toward her waist.
She placed her fingertips on the lapels of his jacket, smoothing the fabric flat against his chest. He took another step forward, wrapped his arms around her back, and pressed his cheek against the curve of her neck as she closed her eyes.
Through the Camera Lens
In the adjacent parlor, the shopkeeper raised a black camera to her eye and leveled the lens. Soft daylight filtered through tall curtained windows, illuminating the intricate embroidery of the gown and the worn rug underfoot.
She adjusted the focal ring and lowered the viewfinder slightly to guide their posture. The husband cupped his wife’s hands within his own, bringing them up toward his chest.
He bowed his head, resting his lips against the knuckles of her right hand while the shutter clicked repeatedly. She smiled, her grey hair pinned back neatly in a soft bun as their foreheads touched in the center of the frame.
