Stranded on the Shoulder
The spindly brown legs of a baby moose scrambled fruitlessly against the rough grey face of a highway divider.
On the asphalt shoulder, the tiny calf pressed its chest flat to the concrete, unable to clear the waist-high barrier.
Just inches away on the grassy side stood a towering moose with broad, palmate antlers, gazing downward over the wall.
A woman wearing black athletic leggings and a white workout top walked deliberately along the edge of the travel lane.
She kept her gaze fixed on the trapped youngster while passing vehicles slowed in the adjacent lane.
Every scrape of the calf’s small hooves against the concrete sent tiny flecks of road dust into the air.
The young animal pushed its muzzle over the concrete rim, trying to reach the massive adult that leaned down to meet it.
A Startling First Attempt
The woman slowed her stride as she drew level with the calf’s hindquarters.
She extended her right hand, fingers outstretched toward the small brown back.
The enormous antlered moose immediately dropped its muzzle forward across the top of the barrier.
The giant’s dark snout reached within inches of her outstretched palm, letting out a sharp puff of breath.
The woman gasped, her jaw dropping open as she pulled her hands back toward her chest.
She took two quick paces backward across the asphalt, her eyes wide as she regained her footing.
The calf remained wedged against the wall, its long, gangly legs trembling under its small frame.
On the opposite side, the adult moose pulled its head back slightly, remaining anchored in the tall grass.
Lifting Over the Concrete
The woman stood in the roadway for a brief second, shaking out her wrists and gathering her breath.
She stepped forward again, closing the distance between herself and the barrier.
Lowering into a deep squat, she slid her left forearm beneath the calf’s chest and wrapped her right arm around its rear legs.
Her shoulders tensed as she took the full weight of the dense, furry body into her arms.
With an audible grunt, she pushed up through her heels, hoisting the young animal completely off the ground.
The calf’s long legs dangled mid-air, hooves dangling uselessly as she hoisted it upward.
She leaned her torso forward over the concrete rim, bringing the calf directly toward the towering adult’s front legs.
With a firm push from her forearms, she tipped the baby over the top of the divider.
Disappearing Into the Pines
The calf’s hooves struck the soft dirt and green weeds on the far side with a muffled thud.
The woman quickly pulled her arms back and stood straight up, resting her hands against her thighs.
The little calf scrambled to its feet, shaking its head once in the thick brush.
The massive antlered moose pivoted its body away from the highway and stepped toward the tree line.
The baby trotted directly behind the giant’s hind legs, its tiny ears pinned forward as they moved in unison.
The woman watched from the shoulder with her blonde ponytail resting against her shoulder, hands resting at her sides as the two dark silhouettes vanished into the dense stand of pine trees.
