An Anxious Standoff by the Roadside
A mother deer stomped her right hoof into the autumn grass, blowing a sharp burst of air through her nostrils.
A few feet in front of her, a piece of plywood lay propped over a heavy circular storm grate, wedged at an odd angle.
From the narrow triangular opening between the iron bars and the wood, a small spotted head poked out, its ears twitching erratically.
The fawn kicked its legs against the dark concrete walls below, struggling to find traction against the slick, damp basin.
Each time the young deer shifted, the mother took two stiff strides forward, her neck stretched long and her ears flared outward.
She stomped the turf again, rustling the fallen maple leaves beneath the red canopy of the overhanging tree.
Reaching Down Toward the Heavy Iron
A man walked into the frame, his heavy work boots stepping softly onto the shoulder of the road.
He stopped beside the edge of the curb, letting the mother deer register his presence without making sudden movements.
Lowering his body to one knee, he positioned his hands along the rim of the plywood cover.
The doe flinched, leaping backward several feet onto the grass with a hollow thump of her hooves.
She did not flee into the woods, but instead planted her feet firmly, keeping her eyes locked onto the kneeling figure.
The man rested one palm against the plywood to keep it from slipping back down onto the fawn’s neck.
With his other hand, he reached beneath the wooden plank, hooking his fingers through the cold cast-iron spokes of the drain cover.
The iron was heavy, caked with grit and dried soil around the circular lip of the opening.
Lifting the Gate to Freedom
He tightened his grip on the grate and pulled upward, using his thighs to lever the combined weight of the metal and board.
The iron grating scraped against the concrete frame, groaning as it tilted back at a wide angle.
The fawn pressed its front hooves against the inner lip of the hole, its white-spotted flank emerging into the late afternoon sunlight.
With a quick scramble of slender legs, the fawn hoisted its hindquarters clear of the opening and scrambled onto the grass.
It shook its coat once, scattering dried debris from its fur, and took three quick strides directly toward the doe.
The mother leaned down, touching her nose to the young one’s neck as their bodies aligned under the bright crimson maple leaves.
The man let the iron grate rest gently against the grass before rising to his feet and stepping back.
Both deer turned side by side toward the shelter of the tree line, their tails flicking in unison as they walked away through the tall grass.
