A Sudden Shadow On The Curb
The front tire of a heavy black motorcycle rolled to a stop against the concrete curb, kicking up a faint spray of street grit.
Behind it, three more motorcycles rumbled into position along the asphalt, their exhaust pipes trembling as the engines idled.
On the sidewalk sat an elderly man on a weathered wooden stool, his hands folded loosely in his lap.
Right beside his knees, an overturned wooden crate served as a makeshift table, covered in coarse tan burlap with a handwritten sign reading “LEMONS 50¢.”
A woven basket holding barely a dozen yellow lemons rested directly in the center.
The lead rider swung his right boot over the motorcycle’s leather seat and stepped onto the curb.
He wore a sleeveless leather vest, dark sunglasses, fingerless gloves, and a black half-shell helmet.
He stopped two paces away, towering over the small stool.
Hands Pressed Over Eyes
The vendor looked up, his jaw dropping open as his shoulders pulled inward.
He raised both palms to his face, pressing his fingers tightly over his eyes and forehead as his elbows tucked into his chest.
He did not look up again.
The rider took one step closer, reaching down toward the wooden fruit stand with both hands.
He gripped the lip of the woven basket and tipped it sideways, spilling the fruit onto the dirt and asphalt.
The lemons bounced against the curb and rolled into the gutter.
The rider threw his head back, letting out a loud, booming laugh that echoed off the neighboring brick houses.
Without a word to the man, he turned his back, walked to his bike, and kicked it into gear.
The pack accelerated down the street, their tail lights disappearing around the far bend under the green trees.
What Lay Beneath The Canvas
The vendor lowered his hands slowly, resting them against his brown shorts.
He stared straight ahead at the empty roadway, blinking against the midday sun.
A few stray lemons lay motionless in the leaves beside his sandals.
He pressed his palms against his knees, straightened his legs, and stood up from the stool.
Bending his waist, he reached down to gather the burlap cloth and straighten the crate.
He pulled the fabric upward by one corner, peeling it back from the wooden frame.
His fingers froze mid-air.
Inside the wooden slats sat thick, perfectly squared stacks of banded cash, packed tightly side-by-side.
His mouth fell open, and his right hand flew to his chest, clutching his orange collar as his knees gave a slight tremble.
The Secret Motion Revealed
Moments earlier, while the elderly vendor had his face buried inside his hands, the rider’s hands had moved with quiet precision.
He had pulled a heavy bundle of bills from his leather vest and lifted the edge of the burlap drape.
With two swift motions, he slid the stacks into the hollow belly of the crate.
He smoothed the fabric flat, placed the basket on top, and dumped the lemons only to mask the drop.
The rider’s laugh had been a shield, giving him cover to ride away before the man could look up.
Back on the pavement, the vendor leaned over the crate, his fingers gently brushing the crisp edges of the paper currency beneath the open sky.
