Cast Out on the Stone Steps
A pink tweed sleeve swung forward, knocking a burgundy canvas duffel down the wet stone stairs.
The bag tumbled against the dark granite risers, spilling a pale folded blanket across the rain-slicked landing below.
Standing beside the open archway of the manor, the young woman cradled a white dog in her left arm and tilted her chin upward.
“Grandpa’s gone,” she said, smoothing the fur behind the dog’s ears. “So are you.”
The caregiver stood motionless in her light blue scrub uniform. Her hands closed into tight knots at her sides, fabric straining against her knuckles.
She lowered her gaze toward the damp ground, took a breath through her nose, and descended the flight of stairs.
Gathering What Remained
Reaching the bottom step, the woman knelt onto the cold stone.
Her fingers gently lifted the dropped blanket, folding its damp edges inward to protect the dry fabric inside.
From the pavement, she retrieved a small silver picture frame containing a photograph of three smiling faces.
She wiped a smudge of grit from the glass with the pad of her thumb before tucking it securely into the open duffel pocket.
As she zipped the compartment shut, a single tear tracked down her right cheek, resting on the curve of her jaw.
She did not wipe it away. She simply adjusted the strap of the bag over her shoulder and straightened her spine.
An Unexpected Arrival
Across the wide gravel courtyard, the iron gates creaked open against the damp afternoon air.
A man in a charcoal three-piece suit walked steadily down the center path, carrying a brown leather briefcase in his right hand.
His leather-soled shoes splashed softly through thin puddles reflecting the gray sky overhead.
The granddaughter turned toward the path, a broad smile spreading across her lips as she adjusted the sunglasses perched on her red hair.
She stepped down toward the walkway and extended an open hand toward the visitor.
“Finally,” she said, tilting her head back slightly. “Let’s get this done.”
The Words That Changed Everything
The attorney did not break his stride to take her outstretched hand.
Instead, he moved directly past her, his eyes fixed on the woman wearing scrubs and holding the packed bag.
He stopped two paces away from the stone steps, lowering his briefcase to rest against his leg.
He adjusted the thin wire frames of his glasses and looked directly into the nurse’s face.
“He left the entire estate to her,” the lawyer stated quietly.
On the step above, the extended hand dropped limp. The granddaughter’s lips parted into a wide, hollow oval, her eyebrows pulling sharply upward as her breath caught audibly in her throat.
