Elderly Traveler Tries Booking Five Star Suite With Cash In Hand

  • 3 min read

A Cold Arrival

An elderly man pushed his worn boots across the wet pavement and pulled open the heavy glass doors of the grand hotel lobby.

Rain dripped from the brim of his collar as he stepped onto the polished marble floor. He adjusted his heavy, frayed overcoat and walked toward the reception desk.

Behind the counter, the clerk tapped her pen against the marble surface. Her gaze swept over his uncombed gray hair and stained jacket before settling on his weathered face.

She crossed her arms tightly over her blazer and pointed a finger toward the street. The shelter, she stated flatly, was located three blocks to the east.

An Unexpected Offer

The man reached deep into his coat pocket and withdrew a thick fold of paper bills. He laid the cash flat on the marble counter, smoothing down the edges with his thumb.

He asked for a single room for one night, explaining that he could pay the full rate upfront. The clerk tightened her lips, glanced sideways at the cash, and shook her head, refusing to slide a registry card forward.

Before the traveler could pack his bills back into his pocket, a lobby attendant in a burgundy uniform stepped forward. He wheeled a tall, cushioned armchair across the polished tile, setting it directly behind the older man.

The attendant gestured with an open palm toward the seat, offering a quick smile. He promised to personally look through the system to see what options might be available.

A few moments later, the attendant walked outside into the chill air carrying a paper cup. Steam rose from the lid as he pressed it into the older man’s gloved hands.

The Unmasking

The man sat quietly in the lobby, turning the pages of an unfolded newspaper. From behind the broadsheet, his eyes followed the movements around the front desk as guests arrived in tailored coats.

The glass entrance rotated again, and an executive entered wearing an immaculate navy three-piece suit. He walked briskly to the desk and announced that he had scheduled a priority meeting with the hotel’s owner, Thomas Walker.

The clerk smiled warmly, leaning across the counter to explain that Mr. Walker had not yet arrived. She offered to alert him the moment he stepped through the entrance.

The man on the sofa lowered his newspaper, folded it neatly into quarters, and stood up. He walked straight toward the front desk and unbuttoned his soaked wool trench coat.

Beneath the rough fabric sat a crisp white collared shirt and an ironed black necktie. The arriving executive nodded immediately, addressing him directly as Thomas.

The desk clerk took a rapid step back, her hands flying to her collar. Her knuckles turned white against her lapel as her eyes locked onto his face.

A New Direction

Thomas adjusted his cufflinks and faced the entire lobby staff gathered on the floor. His hands remained steady as he spoke directly to the clerk whose head now hung forward.

He informed her that her standing at the property would undergo an immediate formal review. Then he turned his attention toward the young attendant in the burgundy jacket.

Thomas reached out, extending his right hand. The young man gripped it firmly, his shoulders squaring as Thomas offered him the leadership role for the guest relations team.

Moments later, the entrance doors rotated once again. Another traveler walked inside, wearing torn canvas pants and carrying a cracked leather duffel bag.

A uniformed attendant immediately stepped across the lobby, dipped his head with a broad grin, and reached out both hands to take the heavy bag from the traveler’s grip.
