Can A Stranded White Buck Be Saved From Suffocating Plastic?

  • 4 min read

A Tangled Struggle On The Forest Floor

The white stag thrashed his legs against the moss, his hooves kicking dirt into the brush as he fought against a thick sheet of blue plastic wrapped around his eyes and muzzle. He rolled onto his side, his velvet antlers catching on low tree roots while the blue bag pulled tighter across his nostrils.

A man stepped between the mossy tree trunks, holding a pair of heavy utility shears in his right hand. He lowered his body close to the damp soil, keeping his boots flat against the pine needles as he edged toward the flailing buck.

The stag jerked his neck backward at the rustle of leaves, sending his heavy antlers scraping across the bark of an oak tree. The plastic muffled his labored grunts, puffing in and out against his mouth with each rapid intake of breath.

The man extended his left arm, hovering his open palm inches above the animal’s flank before pressing down gently to steady the shuddering frame. He slid the dull edge of the scissors against the stretched blue plastic, feeling for tension along the seam near the jawline.

Careful Blades Around Giant Antlers

With a sudden snap of muscle, the buck kicked both hind hooves into the air, rolling violently onto his back. The man pulled his hands back, avoiding the sharp tips of the antlers as they whipped side to side through the undergrowth.

Instead of backing away, the man adjusted his balance. He placed his knees on either side of the animal’s ribcage, straddling the white torso to keep the thrashing hooves tucked firmly against the ground.

He gripped the blue tarp near the base of the left antler, pulling the material taut so the steel blades could slide underneath without touching the sensitive velvet skin. Snipping inch by inch, he worked the shears around the thick crown where bone met skull.

The buck’s sides rose and fell in short, shallow bursts. The man worked the scissors along the ridge of the snout, slicing through the knot that bound the creature’s jaw shut.

With one smooth pull, he peeled the entire blue sack away from the animal’s face and tossed the crumpled plastic aside onto the leaves.

Catching Breath In The Green Shade

The buck did not immediately bolt into the trees. His dark eyes blinked against the filtered sunlight, taking in the green canopy above while his pink nostrils flared wide, drinking in cool woodland air.

The man slid back onto his knees, dropping his hands into his lap to give the stag room to rise. The buck gathered his forelegs underneath his chest, pushing his front hooves into the dirt before straightening his long hind legs.

Standing at his full height, the white stag towered over the kneeling man, his massive velvet rack tilting slightly as he turned his gaze down toward the moss. He took two slow steps forward until his muzzle was inches from the man’s chest.

The man reached up slowly, curling his fingers under the buck’s soft chin and stroking the pale fur along his jawline. The stag leaned into the palm, letting out a soft exhalation that ruffled the man’s hair.

Turning on his heel, the man stood up and began walking down the narrow dirt trail toward his parked motorcycle. Behind him, the steady crunch of dried leaves followed right at his heels.

A Cold Drink On The Trail

The stag matched his stride, tracking just two paces behind his rescuer as they reached the gravel clearing where the bike stood propped on its kickstand. He watched the man reach down, lift a plastic water bottle from the rear frame, and twist the cap free.

The man turned to face the buck, tipping the mouth of the bottle downward. The white stag stretched his neck forward, opened his mouth, and caught the steady stream of clear water directly on his tongue, gulping down the flow without spilling a drop.

When the bottle emptied, the stag lifted his chin and shook his antlers, sending tiny flecks of velvet and water flying into the air. He turned his head toward the deep thicket beside the path, where the slender ears of a brown doe poked through the green leaves.

The man let out a booming laugh, his chest shaking as the white buck trotted lightly into the ferns to join the watching doe.
