A Sharp Cry Along the Trailside
The spotted fawn opened its mouth wide and pushed out a raspy, high-pitched scream against the gravel.
Its white-dappled flank pressed hard against a weathered wooden barrier that bordered a ditch full of green cattails. Every time the small animal tried to shift, the fallen board wedged its back legs deeper into the dry grass along the edge of the paved path.
A few yards away, an adult doe stood tucked deep inside the reeds, her dark eyes fixed on the struggling youngster. Her ears twitched back and forth as the fawn cried again, throwing its head back into the weeds.
That was when heavy footsteps scuffed against the asphalt.
A Careful Approach to the Reeds
A man wearing a grey ball cap, green t-shirt, and dark shorts slowed his stride and moved directly toward the edge of the ditch.
He did not rush. Instead, he paused at the edge of the gravel shoulder, lowered his torso, and brought himself down into a deep squat directly over the fawn.
The doe did not bolt into the marsh. She shifted her weight on the wet soil, lifting her head above the broad green stalks to watch the man’s hands lower toward her offspring.
The man stretched out his bare hands and rested his palms gently over the fawn’s small ribcage. The animal flailed its front legs, kicking up loose dirt and dried stalks as it let out another open-mouthed wail.
The man kept his fingers steady, lightly smoothing the fawn’s fur and easing pressure off the trapped limbs.
Inches From the Mother’s Nose
The mother took a bold step forward, stepping clear of the dense reeds and planting both front hooves right over the wooden rail.
Her muzzle dropped down until it hovered inches above the man’s hands. She sniffed the air around her baby’s face, nostrils flaring as she inspected the man crouched beside them.
The fawn let out one last squeal, but the man held his hands in place, giving the little animal leverage to free its rear quarters from beneath the angled beam.
Feeling the weight lift off its hindquarters, the fawn scrambled against the dirt. The man pulled his hands back smoothly, standing up and stepping away to clear the path.
The fawn planted all four hooves into the dry weeds. Its knees shook for a fraction of a second before finding firm purchase on the grassy slope.
Back Into the Tall Grass
The mother immediately nudged the fawn’s rear with her nose, turning her body toward the safety of the wetland.
Together, they took three synchronized steps off the gravel verge, their brown coats brushing against the wooden beam.
The doe slipped back between the tall green cattails, and the spotted fawn followed directly behind her tail, both disappearing completely into the thick stalks.
