Frenzied Birds Corner Unsuspecting Humans Along Public Pathways And Construction Sites

An Ambush Along The Shoreline Trail

Broad brown wings slammed directly into the runner’s chest as she rounded the bend along the water.

She stumbled backward onto the asphalt path, throwing her arms up to shield her face while the adult Canada goose hissed with neck outstretched. Every step the woman took backward only drew another sharp snap of feathers and beaks, forcing her toward the grassy slope near the lake.

Instead of flying away, the goose turned around, took several rapid waddles forward, and glanced over its shoulder to see if the jogger followed. The runner slowed her pace, keeping a cautious distance between her running shoes and the bird’s lowered beak.

The bird halted directly beside the mouth of a ribbed concrete drainage pipe embedded in the earth. It bobbed its head up and down, uttering low, urgent grunts toward the dark opening.

The Trapped Gosling

The woman dropped to her knees, placing her bare palms in the damp grass and leaning her forehead against the lip of the concrete tunnel.

A faint, high-pitched peeping echoed from the shadows within the cylinder. Several feet back in the dark culvert, a tiny patch of yellow down shifted against the damp silt.

She stretched her right arm into the narrow tube, extending her fingertips along the cool stone until her knuckles brushed against damp feathers. Her fingers cupped under the gosling’s warm belly, supporting its fragile legs against her palm.

She pulled her arm backward smoothly, shielding the chick’s head from scraping against the concrete ceiling as daylight caught its downy body.

She lowered both hands to the dirt and spread her palms flat, releasing the tiny yellow bird onto the grass. The gosling scrambled immediately toward the larger bird’s gray flank, ducking under the safety of folded wings while the woman let out a breathless laugh.

A Frantic Encounter On Fresh Asphalt

Miles away on a quiet residential street, a road worker leaned his weight into a heavy asphalt rake, smoothing steaming black tar along the concrete curb.

A female mallard rushed straight onto the fresh surface, pecking insistently at the thick rubber of his work boots. The man stepped back, lifting his shovel to avoid brushing the brown feathers with blistering black residue.

The duck refused to retreat, flapping her wings against his shins before marching three paces onto the lawn and stopping dead. She snapped her bill toward the turf, waiting until the worker took a step in her direction before waddling another few yards ahead.

She led him straight toward an iron utility plate sunk deep into the manicured grass. She circled the cast-iron lid twice, stretching her neck flat against the metal edge and quacking into the seam.

Reaching Down Into The Dark Chamber

The worker knelt in the grass, his bright orange gloves gripping the recessed notch along the rim of the round iron cover. He wedged his fingers beneath the edge and hoisted the heavy lid aside, setting the metal down in the dirt.

Inside the deep hole, perched precariously on a horizontal iron water pipe, stood a tiny yellow duckling with its beak pointed straight up toward the sky.

The man peeled off his heavy right glove and eased his bare arm down through the narrow cylinder. He positioned his hand beneath the pipe, closing his palm gently around the shivering chick.

Lifting his arm straight upward, he brought the duckling into the midday sun and knelt beside the curb. The mother duck rushed forward immediately, extending her neck and touching her bill against the worker’s open palm.

The tiny yellow chick hopped onto the grass, tucking itself tight against its mother’s tail feathers as she waddled away down the lawn. The worker rocked back on his heels, pulled off his hard hat, and beamed into the camera lens with his dirty orange glove resting on his knee.
