Mother Duck Urgently Leads Boardwalk Walker Toward The Tall Grass

  • 3 min read

An Urgent Guide on the Wooden Planks

Heavy rubber boots struck the gray cedar boards in an even cadence before a sharp, rapid quack cut through the marsh breeze.

A female mallard paddled her orange webbed feet across the planks, turning her head back toward the man in the green uniform.

She fluttered forward five steps, paused, and looked over her mottled brown shoulder until he matched her pace.

Each time his boots slowed, the bird stretched her neck forward and vocalized with quick, persistent bursts, pulling him farther down the narrow path that cut through the tall grass.

A Glimpse into the Tangle Below

The mother duck stopped abruptly at a wooden bend, hopping down into the damp mud right beside the timber pilings.

The ranger bent his knees, resting his hands across his thighs as he peered down into the marsh floor.

Tucked tightly into a woven circle of dead reeds was a clutch of smooth, pale eggs resting beside two tiny, downy ducklings huddled against the chill.

The mother leaned down toward the nest for half a second before immediately turning her head toward the dark gap beneath the walkway.

She waddled through the shallow black water, flicking her tail feathers with sharp, nervous twitches.

She stopped beneath the overhang of the planks, dipping her bill into the murky shadow and calling out with a softer, rhythmic whistle.

Reaching Beneath the Timber

The ranger dropped down onto one knee, the wet rubber of his boot pressing deep into the timber edge.

Underneath the dark skirt of the boardwalk, half-wedged into wet river silt and thick reed stalks, a tiny ball of dark down shuffled weakly.

The duckling had become wedged into the damp crevice, its small webbed feet churning mud without finding traction.

Its mother stood less than six inches away, nudging the wet reeds with the side of her bill while keeping her gaze locked on the opening.

The man slid his bare right hand beneath the edge of the boardwalk frame, keeping his fingers flat and open.

He navigated around the rough grain of the wooden joists and the slippery green stems until his fingertips brushed against the chick’s damp down.

The chick squirmed forward into the man’s palm, its tiny beak tapping lightly against the skin of his knuckles.

Cupping his palm beneath the chick’s belly, he slid the bird clear of the mud channel and brought it out into the afternoon light.

Reunion in the Tall Grass

The ranger crouched down until his hand rested level with the muddy bank.

He opened his fingers wide, letting the small duckling feel the squelch of the soft earth beneath its webbed feet.

The chick scrambled forward on unstable legs, peeping sharply as it stumbled toward the dry reeds.

The mother duck immediately closed the distance, tucking her body around the newly freed duckling alongside its waiting siblings.

Her beak gently preened the damp feathers along the chick’s back, pressing the small family together into a compact cluster among the green shoots.

The ranger pushed himself up to a full stand, stepped back onto the cedar planks, and watched the hen settle her wings over the three chicks while the surrounding grass swayed softly in the wind.
