Man Finds Injured Deer On Roadside As Baby Cries Nearby

  • 3 min read

A Cry From The Concrete Ditch

A pregnant spotted deer lay motionless on the asphalt shoulder, inches away from a narrow concrete drainage ditch.

A young fawn stood trapped in the shallow water below, its tiny mouth open wide as high-pitched bleats echoed against the highway embankment.

Semi-trucks rushed past, kicking up dust and vibrating the ground beside the fallen mother.

A tear traced a path down the mother deer’s snout while her flank slowly expanded and flattened with shallow breaths.

Down in the ditch, the baby struggled against the wet concrete, planting tiny hooves into the murky trickling water.

A black sedan pulled onto the gravel shoulder, its hazard lights clicking on.

Emergency On The Roadside

The driver stepped out, shut his door, and hurried over to the edge of the roadway.

He knelt beside the deer, placing his bare palm against her swollen abdomen to check for signs of life.

He pulled out his phone, dialed emergency rescue services, and spoke rapidly while gesturing toward the ditch where the fawn was crying.

Sirens soon echoed in the distance, followed by the arrival of a white animal rescue vehicle and two uniformed wildlife technicians.

The rescuers knelt in the dirt, gloved hands assessing the mother’s shallow respiration before gently lifting her into the back of their vehicle.

They reached down into the trench, scooping up the soaking wet fawn and placing him securely on the rear seat wrapped in dry blankets.

Under The Operating Lights

Inside the clinic, surgical lights illuminated the stainless-steel treatment table where the team laid the mother down on blue sterile pads.

A veterinarian secured an oxygen mask over the doe’s muzzle while a technician taped an intravenous catheter into her foreleg.

The older fawn stood right beside the metal table, resting its nose directly against its mother’s neck as medical monitors beeped in rhythmic pulses.

The surgeon adjusted sterile clamps and administered medication, monitoring the steady rise and fall of her chest.

Minutes later, gloved hands lifted a second newborn fawn onto the blue drape right beside the mother’s abdomen.

The mother blinked, slowly lifted her head from the padded operating table, and reached her muzzle down to lick the newborn’s damp spotted fur.

Return To The Forest Canopy

Both fawns crowded close against their mother’s flank, their small ears flicking back and forth under the bright examination room lights.

Two days later, the rescue team parked their vehicle beside a dense wooded thicket dappled with morning sunlight.

The rescuers knelt on the grass, resting their palms against the backs of both young fawns while the mother stood steadily on all four legs.

The two young fawns turned and walked abreast into the ferns, their small tails twitching in unison as the doe led them deep into the green tree line.
