Desperate Woman Finds Lost Watch After Being Forced Onto The Street

  • 3 min read

Left on the Front Step

The woman in the dark trench coat shoved a worn fabric bag into the older woman’s chest and pointed firmly toward the suburban street.

On her knees against the welcome mat, the elderly woman pressed her palms together, pleading through tears as the front door slammed shut in her face.

She dropped her forehead into both hands, her shoulders trembling against the white siding of the porch.

Nobody opened the door again.

She gathered the strap of her frayed handbag, pushed herself up from the concrete step, and turned down the driveway toward the road.

A Glint on the Cold Pavement

Her worn slip-on shoes shuffled along the sidewalk lined with bare autumn trees and quiet brick houses.

She kept her head down, clutching the bag tight against her floral dress, tears still wetting her wrinkled cheeks.

A few yards past a parked sedan, her eyes caught something pale lying directly across the gray seam of the walkway.

She bent her knees slowly, reaching downward until her fingers closed around a heavy, silver-linked wristwatch.

She turned the timepiece over in her palms, looking up and down the empty residential block to see if anyone was searching for it.

Finding no one in sight, she moved toward a wooden park bench beside the curb and sat down on the weathered slats.

She held the watch securely in both hands resting on her lap, watching the roadway as the afternoon turned gray.

A Stranger Approaches

A man dressed in a dark business suit and black tie walked briskly down the sidewalk, holding a briefcase in one hand.

He stopped right beside the wooden bench, his brow furrowed as he scanned the lawn and gutter before turning toward her.

He asked if she had seen a wristwatch dropped along the road.

Her hands lifted immediately, extending the metallic band toward him with open palms.

The man took the watch, inspected the clasp, and his stern expression broke into a wide smile as he nodded in gratitude.

He stepped back, set his briefcase down, and reached into a shopping bag he had been carrying.

He pulled out a brown cardboard parcel tied neatly with rough twine and placed it gently into her hands.

She smiled softly, thanking him as he turned on his heel and walked away down the quiet residential sidewalk.

The Untied String

She rested the small parcel on her floral-print lap, using both thumbs to loosen the knotted twine.

She pulled the cardboard lid up and away from the base.

Inside the box, tightly stacked beneath the lid, sat neat bands of crisp hundred-dollar bills.

Her mouth fell open, both hands flying up to cover her lips as tears streamed down her cheeks, her gaze fixed entirely on the contents of the open box resting on her knees.
