An Unyielding Guard Beside the Road
An officer walked along the narrow asphalt shoulder toward a circular concrete drainage pipe embedded in the dry roadside ditch.
A full-grown baboon sat perched on the sloped rim of the culvert, leaning forward to peer deep into the shadowy opening.
Down inside the concrete barrel, a much smaller baboon pressed its paws against the smooth gray interior, unable to find traction on the curved wall.
The dry grasses of the plain rustled softly against the culvert’s edge as the officer drew near, his boots stepping carefully across the cracked gravel verge.
A Display of Bared Teeth
The officer bent his knees and lowered himself into a crouch right beside the culvert’s mouth.
He laid one flat palm against the warm concrete lip to steady his weight, peering inward to gauge how far the smaller animal had slipped.
The large baboon spun around instantly, throwing its shoulders back and opening its jaws wide to reveal a row of sharp, pale canines.
A harsh, rattling screech split the air as the animal thrust its head forward, snapping inches from the man’s knee.
The officer pulled his hand back slightly and lifted an open palm at chest height, holding the gesture steady in front of him.
“Calm down, it’s okay, I’m here to help,” he said, keeping his tone flat and level without breaking his slow breathing.
The baboon closed its mouth, its ears twitching back as it shifted its weight onto its knuckles.
It looked down toward the opening again, reaching one dark hand into the hollow cylinder before turning its gaze back to the kneeling officer.
The Rescue from the Dark Cylinder
The officer waited for the adult animal to settle onto its haunches before leaning forward once more.
He extended both arms into the narrow concrete chamber, reaching past the shadows until his fingers made contact with the juvenile’s dusty fur.
The adult watched every inch of his movement, shifting restlessly on the gravel rim but keeping its teeth covered.
Cradling the young baboon firmly beneath its front limbs, the officer carefully hoisted it out of the darkness and into the open daylight.
The small creature’s arms flailed for a fraction of a second until its feet touched the sunlit ground beside the rim.
The adult lunged forward, wrapping both arms around the young one’s torso and pulling it tight against its chest.
Without a backward glance, the larger baboon scrambled down the embankment, herding the smaller one ahead through the dry brush.
The officer pushed himself upright, resting both hands near his utility belt as the pair vanished into the amber grass beneath an umbrella thorn acacia.
