A Narrow Stone Opening
The small grey pup shoved its snout directly into the circular drainage hole at the base of the roadside retaining wall.
Its rear paws scrambled against the loose gravel, kicking up dust as its shoulders wedged tightly into the concrete cylinder.
Just inches away, the adult female wolf stood tall on long, silver-furred legs, lowering her muzzle toward the pup’s hindquarters.
Cars slowed along the mountain highway, tires crunching against the shoulder as drivers peered out through rolled-down windows.
A man in a burnt-orange hooded jacket opened his vehicle door and walked along the edge of the gravel shoulder.
He kept his boots moving at an even, deliberate pace, his gaze fixed on the mother’s upright ears and narrowed eyes.
Closing The Distance
The adult wolf turned her head toward the footsteps, her body angling between the moving traffic and the trapped pup.
The man dropped his center of gravity, sinking down onto one knee several feet away from the stone wall.
He extended his leather-gloved left hand toward the ground, palm turned upward, keeping his fingers flat and still.
The mother wolf lowered her snout, sniffing the air between them as the pup let out a muffled whimper inside the stone opening.
Instead of baring her teeth or backing away into the trees, the mother remained stationed beside the hole, her tail tucked slightly low.
The man slid forward across the rough gravel until his knees rested directly in front of the stone barrier.
He spoke in a low, level murmur, his eyes shifting between the mother’s jawline and the pup’s pinned shoulders.
Working The Concrete Edge
His right hand settled softly onto the pup’s lower back, feeling the rapid rise and fall of the small animal’s ribs.
The pup kicked its rear legs outward, claws scraping uselessly against the stone foundation.
With both gloved hands, the man carefully encircled the pup’s torso just beneath its front legs.
He applied a slow, backward traction, adjusting the angle so the pup’s ears wouldn’t scrape against the inner lip of the drainage pipe.
A short yelp echoed from inside the stone cylinder as the fur around the pup’s neck gathered against the rim.
The mother took a step closer, resting her nose against the man’s forearm as he maintained his grip.
He didn’t pull sharply; instead, he rotated the pup’s chest a few degrees to clear the widest part of the skull.
With a firm, controlled slide, the pup’s head popped free from the dark pipe into the afternoon sunlight.
Reunion On The Shoulder
The man lifted the small pup slightly from the gravel, supporting its belly with both hands as its feet found the earth.
The mother immediately lowered her head, licking the dust from the pup’s forehead and ears with wide, sweeping strokes.
She nudged her snout under the pup’s chin, rolling the young wolf slightly toward her chest to inspect its throat.
The man remained still on his knees, his hands resting on his thighs as a wide grin spread across his face.
The pup shook its entire body from ears to tail, scattering grey dust across the stones.
The mother turned her body toward the tree line, nudging the youngster forward with the side of her shoulder.
Both wolves stepped up the rocky slope and walked side by side into the tall grass along the forest edge.
