A Sudden Bribe in the Park
A man crouched down on the cobblestone walkway and pressed a folded ten-dollar bill into a little boy’s red knitted mitten. He gestured toward a woman strolling down the snow-covered path in an elegant cream coat. The young boy looked up with wide eyes, gripping the cash before turning toward the walkway with a fresh snowball scooped in his small hands.
The white clump flew through the chilled afternoon air and struck the woman squarely on the shoulder, sending powdery fragments tumbling down her sleeve. She gasped, spinning around on the pavement with her eyes wide and her coat dusted in fresh frost.
The man in the long dark overcoat sprang forward across the stone path, his hands raised in front of him as if trying to shield her from further disruption. He offered a quick apology, claiming his nephew had terrible aim and never meant for the stray throw to land anywhere near her.
An Apology and an Invitation
The woman brushed the damp powder from her lapel, her eyebrows dipping slightly as she assessed the situation. Her lips curved with skeptical amusement while she listened to his explanation.
He stepped closer, adjusting his collar against the cold air and offering to buy her a hot coffee to make up for the stray winter projectile. She looked directly into his eyes, tilting her head slightly as the afternoon sun caught the edges of her brown hair.
Before she could give him an answer, two more snowballs sliced through the cold air. One struck her shoulder, while the second caught the back of his dark wool coat, bursting into tiny white shards across the fabric.
Caught in the Act
The man spun around, throwing his hands out in disbelief toward the two youngsters standing just a few feet behind them. Another young girl in a purple jacket had joined the boy, both of them grinning beside the park bench.
The boy pointed directly at the man and announced loudly that he had hit her too, demanding his own ten-dollar reward. The young girl bounced on her snow boots, holding out her empty hand and asking where her cash was.
The woman looked between the shouting children and the man in the dark coat, crossing her arms over her chest as the truth laid bare on the snowy pathway. The man ran a gloved hand through his hair, his cheeks turning red as his gaze dropped to the ground.
He cleared his throat quietly, trying to regain his footing, and asked once more if coffee was still on the table. She looked him up and down, a knowing smirk spreading across her lips as she told him to make it dinner instead.
