A Cruel Prank On The Curb Catches A Stranger’s Attention

  • 4 min read

A Cruel Hand From The Car Window

The fried drumstick slipped from the driver’s fingers and bounced across the dirty curb. Dust and gravel coated the hot crust before it settled beside an old pair of worn work boots.

Inside the gold sedan, the driver threw his head back against the headrest, mouth open wide in loud laughter. He jabbed a finger toward the pavement, ordering the older man to bend down and retrieve the discarded meal.

The grey-bearded man did not look up into the driver’s face. He bent his knees slowly, lowering his frame down onto the sidewalk with one hand bracing against his worn denim knee.

His dirt-stained fingers closed around the breaded drumstick, picking the grit off the surface with careful, shaking motions. He sank down onto the concrete edge, pulling his frayed coat tight around his shoulders before raising the food to his mouth.

The car window slid down another inch, and the driver leaned across the passenger seat clutching a clear plastic water bottle. He twisted the plastic cap off and tilted the opening directly over the man’s bowed head.

Cold water streamed in a heavy cascade through the elder’s matted grey hair, running down his forehead and soaking into the collar of his tattered plaid shirt. The man closed his eyes tight against the splash, his grip tightening around the piece of chicken while the driver burst into another fit of laughter.

A Shadow On The Asphalt

Heavy black boots struck the pavement twenty yards down the residential street. A broad-shouldered man in a fitted black shirt and dark jeans marched forward along the curbline.

Tattoos wrapped entirely around both of his thick forearms, flexing with each step as his knuckles gripped the gathered neck of a heavy black trash bag. His jaw remained clenched, teeth pressed together as his stare locked straight onto the side profile of the sedan.

The driver continued chuckling to himself, taking another bite from his own fast-food container while leaning lazily out the car door. He never noticed the approaching silhouette until the heavy boots stopped directly beside his rear bumper.

The newcomer did not call out or tap on the glass. He swung his torso back, using the full momentum of his broad shoulders to launch the loaded garbage bag straight through the open passenger window.

The dense plastic bag slammed into the driver’s chest and lap with a blunt, violent thud, knocking the fast-food box upside down across the dashboard. The driver’s jaw went slack, his eyes widening in pure shock as greasy crumbs and napkins scattered across his steering wheel.

An Offer To Stand

Before the driver could sputter a word or shove the trash off his lap, the tattooed man stepped in front of the vehicle. He turned his back entirely on the car and leaned down toward the curb.

He reached out both hands, palms facing up, offering a firm grip to the drenched, trembling man seated on the asphalt. The older man lifted his chin, blinking through water droplets that still dripped from his grey eyebrows.

Two scarred, calloused hands met in the open air between them. The newcomer pulled upward with steady leverage, absorbing the older man’s weight until both feet were planted firmly on solid concrete.

The driver scrambled to toss the garbage bag out his window, but the pair was already moving away from the vehicle. They walked side by side down the sidewalk, the tall stranger keeping his pace slow and matching each shuffling stride of the elder.

A Warm Meal Under The Neon Lights

Inside the diner booths a few blocks away, the harsh glare of streetlamps gave way to warm overhead bulbs and the smell of fresh grease. Two red plastic baskets lined with checkered paper rested in the center of the wooden table, piled high with crisp golden chicken, warm biscuits, and sides of gravy.

The older man sat back against the booth cushion, clutching a clean drumstick between both palms. A soft, steady grin creased the deep wrinkles around his eyes as he looked across the table.

The younger man smiled back, pulling a piece of meat from the bone and taking a bite as steam drifted up between them. They both leaned forward over their baskets, chewing and laughing together while cars passed by the diner window.
