A Shape in the Yellow Line
Her running shoes pounded the gray asphalt along the lake road, keeping a steady rhythm until a pale, rounded dome caught her eye directly ahead. It sat balanced precariously on the painted center line, motionless under an overcast autumn sky.
As she drew closer, the shape resolved into a turtle turned upside down, its pale yellow plastron exposed entirely to the elements. Behind it, a dark SUV crested the curve, rolling steadily forward in the exact lane the stranded creature occupied.
Her strides quickened instantly as she closed the distance between them. She threw her right hand out, motioning toward the oncoming vehicle to signal the driver to slow down.
Hands on the Shell
The dark truck slowed to a crawl and drifted toward the shoulder, headlights idling just yards away from the yellow paint. The runner dropped down into a low squat right above the exposed shell, placing her plastic water bottle on the pavement beside her white sneakers.
The turtle remained tucked tight, its wrinkled legs pulled inward against the hard edges of its underside. She slid her fingers beneath the rim of the shell, testing the weight against the rough asphalt.
With a controlled lift, she tilted the heavy shell upward on its side. In one smooth motion, she rolled the body over so its dark, rounded carapace rested right side up on the road surface.
She reached down for her water bottle and twisted off the white plastic cap with her thumb. Tilting the bottle downward, she trickled clear water across the dry ridges of the shell, washing away fine dust and gravel.
Carried Toward the Lake
The runner set the empty bottle back on the road and repositioned her footing. She bent her knees deeply, spreading both hands wide along the sides of the broad shell to get a firm grip.
She lifted the heavy turtle off the pavement, pulling her elbows close to her torso to stabilize the load. Leaving the road behind, she carried it across the gravel shoulder toward the timber steps leading down to the water.
Her white running shoes crunched over loose gray pebbles along the embankment. Tall marsh grasses swayed along the shoreline as she made her way to the water’s edge.
She sank into a squat right at the gravelly shoreline, leaning forward over the shallows. Lowering her arms until the underside of the shell met the surface, she gently eased the turtle forward into the cool water.
The dark shell bobbed briefly before the turtle’s paddle-like legs kicked into motion, churning up clouds of silt beneath the surface. Ripples spread in concentric circles across the flat gray lake as the dark dome glided smoothly away toward the open reeds.
@benxo536 A Few Seconds of Kindness Saved Its Life 🥹❤️ During her daily run, a woman noticed something struggling in the road. It was an overturned turtle unable to move. She immediately stopped, gently helped it back onto its feet, and moved it away from traffic. #TurtleRescue #AnimalRescue #BeKind #wildliferescue
