An Unexpected Pursuit Along the Lake
Two small hands reached into the grass and lifted a tiny gray cygnet off the ground. The mother swan snapped her wings wide open, hissed sharply, and lunged forward with her orange beak thrust outward.
The toddler dropped the young bird into the grass and scrambled backward. Tears flooded down his cheeks as his sneakers slapped frantically against the asphalt path.
Behind him, the massive white bird gave chase, flapping its broad wings against the park breeze and keeping pace with every stride. The boy stumbled, lost his footing, and slid onto the pavement, curling into a seated ball as he wailed.
Instead of striking, the swan paused just inches from the sobbing child. She cocked her head, wheeled around, and began marching purposefully down the paved pathway toward a uniformed officer standing in the distance.
A Surprising Patrol on Foot
The officer planted his boots firmly on the walkway as the tall bird marched straight toward his knees. He tilted his chin down and spoke in a low voice, watching the bird’s outstretched neck.
The swan let out a single call, pivoted on her webbed feet, and began trotting back the way she came. The officer adjusted his duty belt and broke into an active jog alongside her.
Side by side, bird and human sprinted along the curve of the water until they reached the fallen toddler. The officer dropped to one knee on the asphalt and placed a steady hand on the boy’s shoulder.
The child sniffled, his chest hitching as he looked up. Moments later, the adult swan nudged a small cygnet right into the toddler’s lap, watching quietly as the boy stroked the soft down and let out a bright laugh.
A Persistent Tap on the Boot
Across another stretch of shoreline, a wildlife officer stood near the waterline reading notes off her handheld phone. A sharp peck landed directly on the rubber toe of her boot.
A Canada goose stood before her, stretching its dark neck and emitting a loud honk before taking four quick steps away. The bird stopped, twisted its head back, and waited.
When the officer looked back down at her screen, the goose lunged forward again, tapping the leather laces with its beak. She pocketed the device, nodded, and followed as the bird waddled rapidly toward a patch of dense marsh reeds.
The bird glanced backward every few yards to ensure the officer was keeping up. As the shoreline narrowed, the officer picked up her pace, splashing through shallow mud until the goose stopped abruptly beside a rotting log.
Cutting Through the Reeds
Tangled deep within the tall grass sat a bright blue plastic mesh net. Inside the tight folds, three tiny goslings struggled against the synthetic cord, their miniature feet caught in the knots.
The officer dropped down into the wet sand, soaking the knees of her uniform trousers. She reached to her side holster and pulled out a pair of utility cutting shears.
Holding the plastic netting away from delicate downy skin with two fingers, she worked the blades through strand after strand. The mother goose stood barely two feet away, silent and watchful as each tight loop snapped open.
With a final snip of the blades, the last loop parted, and the three goslings tumbled forward onto the wet ground. The chicks shook their damp fluff, took three wobbly steps, and pressed together against the side of the officer’s knee.
