An Unprovoked Strike on the Sidewalk
A man’s right shoe swung straight into the wooden crate, sending red apples and green pears flying across the concrete sidewalk.
Wood splintered against the ground as fruit rolled in every direction, bouncing against the curb and scattering under the afternoon sun.
A red merle dog stood just paces away, front paws planted on the concrete, tracking the man with dark, attentive eyes.
Pedestrians paused on the corner behind them, watching the fruit settle across the walkway.
The man offered no apology and did not glance back at the mess behind him.
He pivoted on his heel, tucked his chin down, and marched straight toward a dark green SUV parked along the curb.
Leaving the Scattered Street Behind
He pulled the driver-side door open with a sharp jerk and climbed into the vehicle, slamming the door shut.
The dog remained by the edge of the display, head tilted toward the curb as the vehicle pulled away into traffic.
Bright red apples lay bruised against the brick foundation of the storefront, resting alongside overturned wooden slats.
The dog turned around slowly, picking a careful path between the scattered pears.
Its paws stepped gently over fallen autumn leaves and rolling produce, avoiding each loose piece of fruit on the pavement.
Down the block, the dark green vehicle had come to an abrupt halt against the curb.
An Abrupt Halt Down the Street
The front passenger tire was completely deflated, squashed flat against the asphalt.
Scattered around the rubber were thick, heavy nails pointing up from the fallen leaves along the gutter.
The dog trotted at an easy pace down the sidewalk, keeping its eyes fixed on the parked SUV.
The car door opened once more, and the man stepped out onto the street.
He walked around the hood, stopped at the front wheel, and dropped straight to his knees on the pavement.
He stared at the compressed rubber, extending his open palms toward the tire in total disbelief.
Frustration on the Curb
The dog stopped a few feet behind him, quietly sitting down on the edge of the stone curb.
The man pushed himself up from his knees, clenched both fists tightly at his sides, and stamped his foot against the road.
He paced back and forth along the driver’s side, muttering as he checked the roadway for more debris.
The dog did not bark, moving only its ears as the man paced back and forth in front of the vehicle.
The man rested both hands on his hips and stared down at the ruined tire, while the dog sat motionless on the curb behind him.
