The Blow In The Assembly Hall
The metal chair slammed against the officer’s shoulders, sending her tumbling forward onto the polished floor.
She dropped to both knees, one hand slapping against the tile to brace her weight while the folding chair clattered beside her.
Behind her stood a woman in a dark navy dress, chest heaving and fists clenched tight at her sides.
Two Marines in dress blues surged forward from their seats in the front row, their white-gloved hands clamping onto the attacker’s arms.
They wrenched her backward before she could swing again, pinning her wrists to her sides as she thrashed against their grip.
“You’re garbage in a uniform!” the woman screamed, spitting the words across the open room.
Restraints And Accusations
The woman twisted violently against the two young men holding her, thrusting a pointed index finger directly at the woman on the floor.
“That medal belongs to people who actually fought!” she shouted, her jaw jutting forward in fury.
The officer slowly pushed herself upward, clutching her bruised upper arm with one hand as she found her footing.
Her hair stayed pinned tight, but her breathing came in ragged bursts as she stared at the woman being hauled away.
An older man seated nearby leaned forward in his chair, his brow furrowed into deep ridges as he watched the commotion.
Beside him, another observer in a suit pulled his hands back against his thighs, completely motionless.
The officer turned slightly toward them, her eyes wide and pale under the harsh overhead lighting.
“I can’t explain it,” she murmured, her voice barely carrying over the scuffling boots near the wall.
An Order To Stop Talking
“Police,” a deep voice barked across the assembly floor.
The boots of a high-ranking officer in full service dress clicked sharply against the tile as he strode toward the center of the hall.
His chest displayed rows of ribbons, badges, and gold buttons that gleamed against dark blue wool.
“Do not finish that sentence,” he commanded, stopping directly in front of her with his posture rigid and his hands resting at his sides.
The room went entirely still, the echoing screams from moments earlier cutting off completely.
The officer swallowed hard, her mouth shutting tight as she lowered her chin before her superior.
In the audience, the young man in the dark tie leaned forward, his knuckles whitening where he gripped the edge of his seat.
No one moved a muscle as another senior officer stepped into the open aisle to address the gathered crowd.
The Mission on Record
The grey-haired commander raised his head and locked his gaze on the spectators who had just watched the assault.
His voice cut through the quiet with measured authority.
“She was the field commander of Operation Night Lantern,” he stated clearly, letting the title ring against the wood-paneled walls.
Across the row, the young man in the suit parted his lips, his gaze widening as the name of the operation registered.
The young man in the suit sat rigid in his chair, his eyes fixed on the general standing beneath the American flag.
