Pinned Against the Marble Counter
Two uniformed police officers drove Jamal against the polished marble counter, pinning his forearms flat while clutching an open manila envelope packed with thick stacks of hundred-dollar bills.
A man in a charcoal suit stood over him, hands resting on his hips as bystander murmurs echoed off the high ceiling.
“Nine thousand dollars in your hands,” the man in the suit said, leveling an index finger directly at Jamal’s face.
Jamal pressed his back against the stone, his eyes darting toward the security dome overhead as he pleaded for someone to examine the footage.
The manager barely blinked, crossing his arms over his chest and claiming the security feeds had gone dark hours earlier.
Tears spilled over Jamal’s lower lashes, tracking down both cheeks as the officers pulled his wrists behind his back.
Two Hours Earlier by the Dumpster
Two hours prior to the confrontation in the lobby, Jamal stood outside in the alley tipping a gray plastic trash can into a metal dumpster.
A thick brown envelope slipped free from the debris, landing on the cracked asphalt beside his work boots.
He knelt down, lifted the flap, and pulled out an index card resting on a brick of taped bills.
Handwritten ink covered the card: ‘For Eli’s heart surgery. Please don’t let this go missing.’
Jamal sprinted across the parking lot toward the street, waving the parcel as a city bus pulled away from the curb.
He sprinted alongside the moving vehicle, calling out toward the rear windows, but the bus picked up speed and vanished down the avenue.
Gasping for breath, his hands resting on his knees, he tucked the envelope under his arm and headed straight back toward the building doors to find another way.
The Footage on the Screen
As the officers began walking Jamal toward the exit doors, an elderly woman in a beige cardigan hurried through the front entrance, her eyes wide as she scanned the floor.
Jamal stepped forward and extended the manila envelope toward her outstretched hands.
She pulled the parcel against her chest, explaining through tight breaths that she had dropped the wrong sack while gathering her belongings for the clinic.
A tall man in a dark suit walked out of the executive office holding a wide tablet out in both hands.
He turned the glass screen toward the manager, displaying clean exterior footage showing Jamal sprinting barefoot across the lot after the transit bus.
The director pointed his finger directly toward the manager, stating that the surveillance cameras had been recording the entire afternoon without interruption.
A New Uniform
The director turned his back on the manager, informing him on the spot that his role at the company was finished.
He turned toward Jamal, extending a hand and offering him a spot in Monday’s corporate leadership program alongside a complete tuition scholarship.
The elderly woman stepped between them, wrapping both arms around Jamal’s shoulders as he wiped his damp cheeks on the sleeve of his coveralls.
Jamal turned toward the glass doors with his shoulders back, the woman’s hand resting gently on his elbow as they walked across the lobby together.
