A Frantic Cry on the Roadside
Two fluffy gray cygnets paced along the edge of the roadside trench, stretching their necks toward a pair of black webbed feet pointing straight toward the summer sky. Their mother was wedged headfirst into the narrow dirt crevice, her white tail feathers locked tight against the packed clay.
The babies chirped in sharp, rhythmic whistles, their downy wings fluttering as they ran back and forth across the gravel. Every few seconds, the trapped bird kicked her webbed feet against the air, unable to find any traction to push herself out of the tight slit in the ground.
A black SUV slowed down on the paved road beside them. The driver cracked open his door, stepped onto the dirt shoulder, and held his phone out to snap a quick photo of the upside-down bird. Instead of reaching down, he stepped backward into his vehicle, pulled the door shut, and accelerated away down the empty highway.
The two cygnets opened their yellow-rimmed beaks and cried louder into the open air as dust settled on the gravel path.
The Tractor on the Shoulder
A green tractor rumbled along the edge of the pond, its wide tires crunching over the gravel before coming to a stop just feet from the ditch. An older farmer wearing faded denim overalls and a ballcap swung open the cab door and stepped down onto the earth.
He hurried over to the trench and leaned his torso forward, bracing his boots against the lip of the embankment. His hands hovered over the bird’s flanks as he surveyed how deeply her neck was buried into the dark soil.
Kneeling directly in the loose dirt between the mother and the frantic babies, he positioned his palms beneath her white plumage. The two chicks scurried toward his knees, chirping softly as his hands settled under the bird’s wings.
He slid his fingers through the packed earth, working around the bird’s chest to loosen the soil that held her captive. He shifted his weight back onto his heels, tightening his grip along her lower body.
Lifting Her to Safety
With a slow, firm upward pull, the farmer drew the white bird straight out of the tight slot. Her long neck emerged covered in loose brown dirt, and she shook her head back and forth to clear the debris from her eyes.
He cradled her body against his chest, smoothing down her ruffled wing feathers as she settled quietly against his denim shirt. The two cygnets gathered immediately at his work boots, pecking lightly at the dirt around his feet.
Instead of leaving the tired family near the edge of the fast roadway, the man scooped up the little ones and settled them into the glass cab of his tractor beside their mother. The three birds huddled together on the metal cab floor as the tractor turned around toward the farmhouse.
A Warm Hearth and a New Home
Inside the farmhouse living room, the farmer sat cross-legged on the patterned rug near the wood stove. He placed a wide metal bowl filled with poultry pellets and grain directly in front of the swan.
The mother dipped her orange bill into the dish, and the two gray chicks pushed their small heads beneath her breast to peck at the scattered seeds on the rug. The farmer watched them eat, resting his forearms on his knees with a wide smile spreading across his face.
Later that afternoon, he knelt on the green lawn outside the house to assemble a wooden pen. He drove timber posts into the turf, stretched wire netting between them, and attached the pitched cedar roof of a cozy coop.
He lifted both cygnets together in his cupped hands and set them down gently onto the fresh grass just outside the small wooden doorway.
The farmer rested one hand on the wooden roof of the coop, smiling down as the two chicks waddled forward into the green grass beside their new shelter.
