A Sudden Cry on the Sand
The spotted fawn shoved its thin legs against the white crushed shell and bleated, its narrow head wedged tightly between the grey metal bars of an overturned rack.
Its dark eyes rolled sideways as it pulled backward, but the metal tubing caught right behind its jaw.
Every lurch rattled the frame against the hard-packed gravel trail beside the coastal dunes.
A few yards away, an adult doe stood motionless among the sea oats, her large ears angled straight toward the thrashing noise.
The fawn let out another rasping bawl, opening its black-rimmed mouth as its small hooves scrambled for traction in the sand.
Running Steps on the Pavement
A runner wearing a cycling helmet and athletic gear sprinted off the asphalt road and slowed his stride as he hit the sand.
He walked forward with open palms, keeping his posture low to avoid startling the young deer further.
The fawn kicked its hindquarters, scraping its slender legs against the diagonal support strut.
The cyclist dropped to one knee on the shell path, resting his weight back onto his heels.
He paused for a second, reading the angles of the steel structure to see where the opening was widest.
The tubular frame held the fawn like a clamp around the base of its skull, right below the ears.
Working the Angles
The cyclist extended both hands, resting his left palm against the warm metal tube and placing his right hand gently along the fawn’s neck.
The fawn flinched and tensed its back muscles, but the cyclist kept his grip light and steady.
He shifted his fingers to the upper crossbar, testing the weight of the metal to see if lifting it would create enough space.
The frame was rigid, offering no flex against the animal’s delicate frame.
Instead of pulling the fawn, he tilted the entire metal assembly forward, shifting the narrowest gap away from the widest part of the fawn’s skull.
His fingers guided the animal’s left ear under the steel bar, moving slowly millimeter by millimeter.
The fawn leaned back into the sand, breathing hard with its nostrils flaring wide.
The cyclist kept both hands firm on the cold tubing, easing the top bar upward just enough to clear the crown of the fawn’s head.
With a quick backward jerk, the fawn pulled its snout through the gap and stumbled out onto the sand.
A Run to the Dunes
The cyclist pulled his hands away instantly and sat back on his knees.
The fawn paused for a brief second on four trembling legs, shaking its head and flicking its ears back into position.
It pivoted toward the cluster of green sea oats where the doe was waiting.
With three quick strides, the young fawn bounded across the sandy clearing directly to its mother.
The doe lowered her muzzle into the grass and brushed her nose against the fawn’s forehead.
Both deer turned side by side and vanished together into the tall coastal grass behind the cottage.
