An Unexpected Tug at the Roadside Cart
A wild doe pressed her snout against the dark fabric of the cooking apron and pulled hard with her teeth.
The woman working behind the roadside griddle dropped her metal tongs onto the edge of the metal warming tray. She stepped back from the steaming pots, her arms raised slightly in surprise.
Instead of bolting into the open grass, the deer held its ground on the gravel shoulder. The animal stretched its neck forward again, gripping the corner of the black apron once more before releasing it and taking two stiff steps backward toward the asphalt.
Cars swept past on the two-lane highway, their tires humming against the pavement. The doe ignored the passing traffic completely, keeping its ears pinned forward and its eyes fixed directly on the vendor.
The woman wiped her hands down the sides of her jeans and moved out from behind the prep cart. As soon as she took a stride forward, the doe pivoted, trotting briskly down the edge of the road with its white tail twitching.
Following the Doe into the Brush
The deer kept a steady distance of ten paces ahead, occasionally turning its head to verify that the woman was still following. Each time the woman paused on the gravel, the doe slowed down and looked back over its shoulder.
After twenty yards along the shoulder, the animal cut sharply to the left. It hopped across the shallow roadside ditch and pushed straight into the dense tree line.
Branches bent and snapped as the deer pressed through the thicket. The woman ducked beneath low-hanging oak leaves, using her forearm to shield her face from loose twigs.
Dry leaves crunched under her shoes as she moved deeper into the canopy. The sound of highway engines faded behind her, replaced by the rustle of leaves as the doe guided her forward through the shadows.
The animal did not run deep into the forest. It halted near a cluster of young saplings, lowering its head toward the forest floor and stomping one front hoof against the dirt.
A Heavy Log Pinned Across the Dirt
The woman stepped past a thick tangle of vines and immediately saw what had stopped the doe. A thick fallen tree trunk lay squarely across the forest floor, pinned down by its own weight.
Trapped beneath the heavy, rotting wood was a tiny fawn. The small creature lay flat on its side among the damp brown leaves, its hind legs wedged tightly under the rough bark.
The fawn’s chest expanded and contracted in rapid, shallow bursts. Its spotted coat was smeared with leaf mold, and its thin front hooves scraped weakly against the soil in an attempt to push free.
The mother doe stood less than two feet away, lowering her muzzle to touch the fawn’s small ears. She glanced up at the woman, then took half a step back to leave room beside the fallen limb.
The woman crouched down into the dirt, planting her boots firmly against the leaf litter. She slid both hands beneath the rough bark of the fallen trunk, wrapping her fingers around the underside of the heavy timber.
Bracing her back and bending her knees, she hoisted the heavy wood upward. Her arms strained against the splintered bark as she lifted the trunk several inches off the ground.
Back on Wobbly Legs
The moment the weight lifted, the little fawn kicked its hind legs and wriggled out from under the bark. The woman set the heavy limb back down onto the forest floor with a solid thud.
The fawn pulled itself forward onto its front knees, trembling slightly as it tried to stand. The mother doe stepped in immediately, lowering her head to lick the fawn’s forehead, ears, and spotted flank.
With each pass of the doe’s tongue, the young deer pushed itself higher, bracing its long, slender legs against the ground until it was fully upright. It shook the loose twigs and dirt from its coat with a quick flutter.
The woman stood upright with her palms resting on her thighs, watching the pair from a few feet away. The doe nudged the fawn’s rear flank forward with her nose, guiding it past the rotting timber.
Both deer turned toward the deeper section of the woods. Side-by-side, their white tails flashed against the green undergrowth as they leaped across the fallen logs and disappeared into the dense trees.
