A Slammed Fist on the Desk
The man’s clenched fist slammed flat against the wooden counter, rattling the white document resting beneath his knuckles.
His face twisted into a hard grimace as he leaned forward over the counter, teeth bared.
“The decision is final,” he barked, driving his fist down one more time onto the polished wood.
Across the counter, the woman did not flinch or pull away.
She lowered her gaze for a split second, her dark eyelids dipping toward the floor as she took a slow breath through her nose.
When she lifted her eyes back toward him, her eyebrows relaxed and her jaw remained completely still.
She kept her chin raised, holding her position without uttering a single word.
An Unscheduled Interruption
A few yards away across the open office, the receptionist sat behind a raised partition desk.
Her hand reached out and lifted the dark plastic telephone receiver from its cradle.
She pressed the handset against her ear, listened for a brief beat, and shifted her eyes across the room toward the counter.
“Sir,” the receptionist said, her voice cutting clean through the quiet lobby.
She leaned slightly forward against her desk, keeping the receiver tight to her ear.
“There’s an important call for you,” she called out across the open floor.
The man’s head snapped to the right, his brow creasing as he pulled his hands back from the paper on the counter.
The Tables Begin to Shift
He turned his torso toward the partition, his lower lip protruding as his eyes narrowed in annoyance.
The receptionist did not look down at her paperwork or hang up the phone.
“Sir,” she repeated, speaking directly into the receiver before addressing him again.
“There’s an important call for you. They’re asking for a senior government official.”
The man’s lips parted slightly, his jaw dropping downward as the words settled.
The scowl on his brow smoothed out, replaced by a sudden widening of his pale blue eyes.
His shoulders, previously squared in confrontation, slumped an inch toward the floor.
He blinked twice in rapid succession, his chest rising and falling as he swallowed hard.
A Quiet Standoff in the Hallway
Past the edge of the doorway, the woman stepped back into the wide corridor.
She wore a crisp cream blouse tucked neatly into blue denim jeans, her arms resting naturally against her sides.
Her head remained tilted slightly upward as a subtle, knowing upturn formed at the corner of her lips.
She watched him from the brightness of the hallway, perfectly poised and grounded in her boots.
The man stood locked by the wooden partition, his face pale and his eyes fixed unblinkingly on her silhouette.
