A Tree Falls Across the Rails
Two paws pressed firmly against the pale bark of a slender birch tree, shoving it downward until the trunk snapped and tumbled across the metal rails. The rough collie backed up through the tall grass, shaking its tail while watching a passenger train rumble into view along the mountain curve. As the diesel engine slowed to a grinding halt behind the obstruction, the dog turned and trotted along the gravel path.
A female rail worker wearing a high-visibility yellow vest stepped out between the tracks to meet the dog. She crouched slightly and reached her hand forward, but the collie spun on its heels and trotted briskly ahead. Her boots crunched over the coarse grey ballast as she tracked the animal’s swift pace toward a switch line further up the canyon.
An Unsettling Discovery on the Sleepers
The dog paused near a fork in the tracks, lowering its snout to sniff at a pale shape pinned against the wooden ties. Bound tightly with thick coils of rough hemp rope, a young white lamb lay motionless directly over the rails. Its small hooves were tucked under its belly, held fast by knot after knot while the distant locomotive idled on the track behind them.
The worker broke into a jog, kicking loose stones as she rushed to the lamb’s side. She dropped onto her knees in the dirt, her fingers immediately working at the thick fibers wrapped around the animal’s ribs. The collie stood shoulder-to-shoulder with her, nuzzling the lamb’s woolly cheek while her hands unthreaded the heavy loops.
Working Free from the Ropes
With quick tugs, the woman slipped the loosened cord over the animal’s back and cast the coils onto the grass beside the track bed. She slid both palms beneath the lamb’s chest and gently lifted its weight off the sharp stone bedding. Setting the young animal upright on the dry grass, she checked each small leg to ensure it could bear weight.
The lamb took a tentative step on the soft verge, shaking its head and leaning its nose against the worker’s orange sleeve. She knelt quietly beside it, stroking the wool behind its ears as the dog nudged closer to sniff the freed creature’s face.
A Moment on the Embankment
The young lamb turned toward the collie, pressing its forehead into the thick fur of the dog’s chest. Both animals stood side by side against the backdrop of golden aspen trees and distant rocky peaks while the engine sat quietly behind them.
The woman wrapped one arm over the dog’s broad neck and rested her other hand on the lamb’s fleece, pulling both animals close as the morning sun illuminated the mountain rails.
