Driver Follows Anxious Doe off Forest Road into Deep Mud

  • 2 min read

An Urgent Guide on the Roadside

An adult doe stepped out from the tall pines and paused directly on the asphalt shoulder, staring straight ahead as a car slowed to a halt.

She flicked her white tail once, turned her head toward the steep embankment, and bound down into the brush.

Instead of continuing along the winding mountain road, footsteps followed the path she had just carved through the tall green ferns.

Just a few yards down the grassy slope, the wild foliage gave way to an unnatural break in the earth.

Trapped in the Wet Earth

A deep, narrow trench sliced across the damp soil, slick with fresh rainwater and dark, sticky mud.

Wedged upright inside the narrow crevice sat a tiny fawn, its speckled brown coat flecked with gray silt.

The young animal had slid into the tight gully, unable to find footing on the steep, slippery mud walls framing both sides.

Its hooves churned uselessly in the watery sediment pool beneath its belly, letting out sharp, high-pitched bleats toward the sky.

Two sneakers planted firmly on the grassy rim above, the blue soles pressing into the mossy dirt.

Reaching into the Crevice

Two bare hands descended slowly into the narrow channel, keeping fingers spread wide and low.

The fawn flinched at first, its dark eyes blinking rapidly as the palms hovered on either side of its ribcage.

Gentle thumbs slid under its front shoulders, feeling the rapid rise and fall of the small chest.

The muddy water made a wet, sucking sound as the weight of the tiny body shifted against the suction of the trench.

The fawn let out another small cry, its front legs tucking tight against its chest while fingers secured around its middle.

Lifting Free from the Sludge

With an upward pull, the fawn’s hind legs lifted out of the thick brown muck, dripping water droplets back into the narrow ditch.

The rescuer brought the spotted fawn completely above the grassy rim, holding it firmly against his shins as its long, slender legs hung down over the open air.
