A Gentle Touch on the Gravel Bank
The mother bear lowered her broad snout until her wet nose pressed against the cub’s tiny dark muzzle.
Cold mist hung over the fir trees across the river. The small brown cub leaned upward on stubby front paws, balancing over smooth gray pebbles slick with river spray.
Its fur stood out in downy clumps, ruffled by the damp breeze drifting off the channel.
The mother stood motionless on the gravel bar. Water dripped from the dark guard hairs along her underbelly, tapping the riverbed below.
She tilted her head sideways, letting the cub brush its small forehead along the side of her jaw. The cub’s ears twitched toward the roar of moving water behind them.
Taking Steps Toward the Whitewater
The adult grizzly turned her massive shoulders toward the fast-moving river. She planted one wide paw forward, rolling smooth stones beneath her claws.
The cub scrambled to match her pace, taking three hurried strides for every single step she took.
Its rounded paws slipped slightly on the wet slope of the gravel ridge. It steadied itself by pressing its shoulder against the thick coat of her foreleg.
Both stopped just inches from the churning waterline. Froth swirled across dark river rocks as the current cut past the bend.
The mother lowered her head again, scanning the surface of the green water where ripples caught the gray sky.
Beside her, the cub crouched low to the ground. It stretched its neck forward, sniffing at the cold foam collecting at the gravel rim.
Examining the Shifting River Shore
The cub took another cautious step forward, sinking its dark claws into the loose gravel bed right at the river’s edge.
The water surged upward, lapping against the black pads of its left paw. The cub pulled back quickly, shaking droplets from its wet toes.
Its mother did not pull away from the bank. She shifted her bulk slightly to block the strongest draft of wind coming off the river rapids.
She dropped her head downward once more, exhaling a low puff of breath that ruffled the cub’s damp fur.
The little one looked up into her amber eyes, its small jaws parting as it took in her scent.
It leaned into her front leg, resting its weight against the firm wall of her side while studying the tumbling rapids.
A Final Check at the Waterline
The cub lifted its front legs slightly, stretching upward toward the mother’s bowed head.
She met it halfway, pressing the damp tip of her nose against the cub’s mouth and chin.
The little cub stood firmly on the gray river stones beside the running water, keeping its muzzle raised toward hers as the cold mountain current rushed past their feet.
