Two Sisters Select Between An Ornate Gold Vessel And Plain Clay

  • 2 min read

Two Jars on a Wooden Table

An elderly mother set two sealed containers onto the wooden table between her two adult daughters. One vessel gleamed with polished gold leaf and carved patterns, while the other sat cracked, rough, and gray.

The sister in the crimson satin gown lunged forward with both hands. Her fingers gripped the neck of the gilded jar, yanking it toward her chest before her sister could even move her arms.

Her sibling in the yellow knit sweater stepped back and kept her palms flat against her sides. She waited until the tugging stopped, then rested her fingertips against the dusty, unpainted clay vessel remaining on the boards.

Unraveling the Red Silk

The woman in red carried her prize into a spacious hall lit by a crystal chandelier. She set the heavy container on an ornate marble table and pulled the twine loose from the red fabric topper.

As the cloth fell aside, three dark serpent heads lifted from the rim, their tongues flicking in the dim light. She stumbled backward, knocking the gilded pot off the table and sending dozens of squirming black snakes spilling across the rug.

She pressed both hands against her cheeks, backing into the wall while backing away from the writhing pile.

The Weight of Clay and Gold

Miles away, the second sister pushed open the heavy wooden door of her small cabin with the rough clay jar tucked in her arms. She placed the weathered pot gently onto the center of her work table.

She walked over to the pegboard on the wall, lifted a steel hammer from its hook, and carried it back to the table. With a deliberate downward tap, the hammer strike fractured the outer shell into thick shards.

A flood of gold coins and fine jewelry poured across the tabletop, burying the fragments of gray earth beneath a shimmering mound. She picked up a single polished gold band and held it between her thumb and forefinger.

In her sunlit living room, the elderly mother adjusted her glasses, rested her hands in her lap, and turned her head to look out the open window.
