Driver Pulls Over When German Shepherd Barks Frantically At Cliffside

  • 3 min read

Standing Guard at the Edge of the Drop

A German Shepherd planted his front paws along the gravel shoulder and stared down over the metal guardrail.

A few feet below him, nestled on a tangle of dry branches and red sandstone, sat a tiny tan puppy. The small pup looked up toward the larger dog, tucking its paws under its chest and keeping its belly flat against the dusty wood.

The drop beneath the nest of branches sloped steeply down toward the valley floor. Pine trees and red rock cliffs stretched into the distance behind them, but the adult dog kept his ears pointed strictly downward.

He paced two steps back onto the road surface, his claws clicking against the asphalt. He looked down the empty curve of the two-lane highway, then turned back to check the ledge once more.

Flagging Down Help on the Mountain Pass

A silver crossover vehicle rounded the bend in the distance, headlights glowing against the afternoon sun.

The German Shepherd trotted directly toward the white fog line on the edge of the road. He raised his muzzle and barked twice in rapid succession, planting all four paws firmly in the oncoming lane’s line of sight.

The tires of the SUV slowed to a crawl over the loose gravel. The vehicle pulled smoothly onto the shoulder just feet from where the dog stood waiting.

A driver in a teal jacket stepped out from behind the wheel. The dog immediately turned around and trotted along the gravel, glancing back over his shoulder to ensure she followed his footsteps.

She walked directly behind him, trailing his wagging tail straight toward the section of guardrail where the sticks lay scattered.

Stepping Over the Steel Barrier

The woman stopped beside the steel beam and rested both palms flat against the metal. She leaned forward, scanning the red rock shelf until her gaze locked onto the small brown figure below.

She lifted one hiking boot over the guardrail, planted it firmly on the rocky outcropping, and swung her other leg across.

The German Shepherd rested his paws against the top rail, watching every move from above. She dropped into a low crouch, balancing her weight on the flat sandstone slab.

She extended her right hand outward, palm open and knuckles lowered. The pup stretched its neck, tapped its black nose against her fingertips, and gave a brief sniff.

Her fingers curled gently under the pup’s chin. She slid her hands down beneath its ribcage, scooping the little body up from the dry branches and cradling it against her chest.

Reunited on the Gravel Shoulder

Clutching the pup securely against her teal jacket, she adjusted her footing on the red stone and stepped back over the steel barrier onto the gravel.

She dropped down to one knee right beside the roadway. She lowered the puppy until all four of its small paws rested on the stone roadbed.

The German Shepherd trotted over and lowered his head, pressing his wet snout against the puppy’s folded ear. The little dog leaned its shoulder directly against the woman’s knee while the adult dog nudged its back.

The woman placed one hand on the puppy’s flank and stroked the German Shepherd’s shoulder, smiling under the open mountain sky as both dogs stood side by side on the shoulder.
