A Cold Refusal
A server pushed through the heavy brass doors of a luxury steakhouse carrying a large silver platter loaded with untouched lobster, steak, and sides.
An elderly man sitting on a piece of cardboard called out to her, raising an open hand toward the tray. He asked her not to throw the meal away.
She narrowed her eyes, wrinkled her nose, and dumped the entire platter into a green alley dumpster before turning on her heel and walking inside.
The man waited until the door clicked shut. He pulled a black plastic trash bag from his pocket and stepped toward the bin.
Reaching inside, he lifted out the meat and lobster tail before carrying them to a sidewalk hydrant.
Sharing in the Alley
He turned the metal valve, letting clear water wash over the shell and meat, wiping the surfaces clean under the stream.
Minutes later, he sat on an overturned crate in a dim alley surrounded by three other men. He placed portions of the hot meal onto paper plates and handed them out.
They tore into the food together, laughing between bites under the glow of a single streetlamp.
Three stray dogs crept along the brick wall, sniffing the air. The elderly man broke off pieces of steak and set them onto a cardboard slab on the asphalt.
The dogs wolfed down the meat, wagging their tails as he scratched behind their ears and patted their ribs.
The Attack in the Alley
Later that night, the server emerged from the employee exit in an overcoat, looking down at her phone screen.
Steam rose from a street vent as she stepped past the brick corner into a quiet corridor. Two masked figures stepped out from the shadows.
One man grabbed her coat, shoving her hard against the brick wall while demanding her purse.
She screamed, clutching the strap with both hands as the attacker pulled her toward the ground.
The three stray dogs darted around the corner, barking and snapping at the assailant’s ankles.
Right behind them, the elderly man ran forward, swinging a heavy metal trash can lid directly at the masked mugger.
The attacker stumbled backward, dropped the purse, and sprinted down the street into the dark.
A Table on the Concrete
The old man picked the dropped bag off the wet pavement and stepped toward the woman, extending his hands to return it.
Mascara ran down her cheeks as she took the leather strap and gripped his calloused fingers tightly.
The following morning, she sat flat on the sidewalk curb beside him and his friends, surrounded by open takeout containers filled with pancakes, bacon, and coffee cups.
She tore a strip of bacon with her fingers and held it out toward the brown pit bull, who took it gently from her hand while the men laughed beside her.
