A Sudden Impact
A full-sized blue pickup truck barreled through the front bay window, scattering shards of glass across the living room carpet.
Emma grabbed her young son Noah by the shoulder and pulled him backward toward the couch. The crumpled hood rested inside the home, smoke drifting from the front grille into the ruined room.
Stepping around the jagged fragments, Emma approached the shattered driver-side window. On the dark upholstery lay a folded sheet of paper demanding fifty thousand dollars for her husband Daniel.
An Unsettling Offer
Footsteps crunched against the glass behind them as their neighbor, Ben Carter, climbed through the wreckage into the hallway. He stared at Emma, asking immediately about Daniel’s whereabouts and an inheritance she was supposed to receive.
Ben stretched his hand out, insisting Emma hand over her mobile phone so he could manage the bank transfer. Emma pressed her arm against Noah, feeling the boy tug gently at her pocket.
Noah pointed a finger toward Ben’s tan jacket pocket. The corner of a dark phone case poked out from the cloth, displaying a familiar sticker.
Ben slid his fingers over the edge of his pocket, claiming he found the device lying beside the driveway. Emma slipped her own phone into her back pocket and turned toward the stairs, telling him she needed her login codes.
Behind Locked Doors
Emma guided Noah upstairs into the bathroom and clicked the lock into the frame. She dialed emergency dispatch, whispering the address and detailing Ben’s presence in her home.
Downstairs doors clicked, followed by heavy footfalls ascending the wooden steps. Ben rattled the brass doorknob, demanding she unlock the entrance immediately.
Emma leaned against the sink counter, keeping her palm flat against Noah’s shoulder. Outside on the pavement, a police cruiser rolled to a halt with lights flashing silently.
An officer grabbed Ben by the elbow as he exited the front threshold, twisting his arms behind his back and snapping handcuffs into place.
Reunion in the Driveway
Emma led Noah through the broken front frame into the midday sun. Sitting by the cruiser’s rear bumper, Daniel raised his head and pushed himself upright from the pavement.
Noah broke into a run, hitting Daniel’s chest with an outstretched hug. Daniel dropped to his knees, burying his face into his son’s yellow shirt as Emma knelt beside them.
Noah pointed back toward the gaping hole in the wall, remarking on the damaged frame. Daniel tightened his arms around both of them, resting his chin on Noah’s shoulder as patrol car lights reflected off the broken window panes.
