Pedestrian Discovers Stuffed Wallet On Sidewalk And Examines The ID

A Discovery on the Pavement

A black work jacket brushed against the metal armrest as Jake stepped off the curb and stopped his stride. Below the slatted wooden bench, a folded square of dark leather rested against the gray concrete.

Jake bent his knees, reached downward, and lifted the heavy brown billfold between his fingers. The leather was thick, creased from years inside a back pocket, and bulging with contents.

He pulled back the flap with both thumbs. Crisp green bills peeked out from the main compartment, stacked tight against plastic cards.

Tracing the Owner

He slid two fingers across the top slot, counting green twenty and fifty-dollar notes packed inside the partition. Beside them sat payment cards, their silver chips catching the afternoon glare.

Beneath the currency sat a clear plastic window holding a state driver’s license. Jake thumbed the laminate, reading the name and the residential address stamped in black print along the lower edge.

He closed the billfold and slipped it into his jacket. Instead of turning back toward the downtown avenue, he walked along the suburban perimeter, checking house numbers against the plastic card in his grip.

Knocking on the Front Door

His sneakers moved up the straight concrete walkway of house number 1356. He paused at the small porch and knocked his knuckles three times against the brown wooden door frame.

The door swung inward to reveal an older man wearing wire-rimmed glasses and a gray jacket. The man exhaled sharply, his shoulders dropping as Jake raised the small driver’s license between his fingertips.

Jake extended his right arm, holding the stuffed brown wallet out across the threshold. The older man reached forward with both hands, clasping the leather and pulling it toward his chest.

The man opened the fold, his fingers rapidly skimming the currency and cards before looking upward with crinkled eyes. He extended his right hand, gripping Jake’s hand in a firm shake.

Refusing the Reward

The older man peeled two bills from the stack and held them outward between his fingers. He thrust the cash toward Jake’s chest, nodding his head forward to urge him to take it.

Jake lifted his right palm flat in the air, shaking his head gently from side to side. A quiet smile crossed his face as he stepped back from the top step.

Jake turned down the concrete path, his hands dropping into his jacket pockets as the older man watched from the open doorway. The camera pulled upward into the evening air, following Jake’s solitary figure as he walked along the tree-lined sidewalk toward the setting sun.
