A Quiet Sacrifice Behind Closed Doors
Selene set the manila folder onto the polished mahogany desk and slid it toward the attorney.
The older man adjusted his glasses, unfolded the paperwork, and looked directly into her eyes. The documents transferred her personal savings and properties to settle every outstanding account balance against Dorian’s architectural firm.
She picked up the silver pen, pressed the tip firmly against the signature line, and wrote her name across the final agreement. When the attorney asked if Dorian should be told who resolved the corporate crisis, she shook her head, pulled her trench coat tight, and stepped toward the exit.
Across town, crystal chandeliers lit up the penthouse ballroom where Dorian celebrated his enterprise’s sudden reprieve. He raised a flute of champagne alongside Vesper, unaware of whose funds cleared his company ledgers.
The Unseen Witness At The Window
Selene arrived on the sidewalk outside the glass pavilion, carrying a silver gift box tucked against her chest.
Through the transparent exterior walls, she watched Dorian step to the center of the gathering. He reached into his coat pocket, pulled out a velvet box, and lowered himself onto one knee before Vesper.
A tear slipped down Selene’s cheek as the surrounding guests erupted into applause. She released her grip on the small parcel, letting it tumble onto the wet pavement beneath her boots.
She turned on her heel and walked through the drizzle toward the avenue. Pausing near an empty iron bench, she unclasp the chain around her neck, placed the ring pendant onto the wet slats, and stepped into a passing yellow cab.
The Truth Surfaces On Paper
Inside the ballroom, the celebrations continued until the attorney pushed through the crowd with an official dossier in hand.
He handed the envelope to Dorian, who broke the paper seal and scanned the top line bearing Selene’s legal signature. His fingers loosened around the paper, letting the sheets flutter to the dance floor as his face drained of color.
He bolted across the corridor, threw open the building doors, and sprinted through the hallway toward her flat. He slammed his fist against the wood paneling, calling her name until an elderly neighbor cracked the door open.
The neighbor spoke softly, explaining that Selene had cleared out her belongings hours earlier without leaving a forwarding address.
An Empty Room And A Lost Path
Dorian pushed into the vacant apartment and walked across the bare wooden floor toward the dining table.
A one-way boarding pass rested beside a handwritten note that instructed him not to follow. He sank onto a wooden chair, clutching the silver necklace to his chest as his shoulders shook.
He rushed through the airport terminal, holding Selene’s portrait out to gate personnel, but each worker shook their head. Outside, rain fell steadily onto the city rooftops.
Dorian stood alone on the wet helicopter landing pad, staring upward into the night clouds as the red navigation lights of an outbound jet climbed into the dark sky.
