Mother Rabbit Pleads With Walking Stranger To Follow Her Trail

  • 3 min read

A Persistent Tug on a Dusty Path

A small brown rabbit repeatedly nudged its nose against an elderly man’s dusty leather boot.

The man paused in mid-stride, his rolled-up jacket sleeves brushing against his sides as he looked down at the gravel track.

Instead of darting into the roadside brush, the animal bolted several yards ahead, spun around, and fixed its dark eyes on him.

Every time the man took a step forward, the creature scurried another ten feet down the paved village road.

It paused near an open trench lined with tall green weeds, turning its head back to check that the man was still moving behind it.

When the man caught up, the rabbit halted directly beside an eroded depression along the dirt shoulder.

Reaching Into the Narrow Burrow

The man bent his knees, placing one palm against his thigh as he leaned over the drop-off.

Down at the bottom of the exposed earthen pocket, a tiny newborn kit lay curled against the damp soil.

Its sides rose and fell in rapid twitches, its fur coated in loose dirt where the steep soil wall kept it trapped.

The adult rabbit remained stationary inches away on the grassy rim, twitching its ears as the man reached both arms down.

He lowered his bare hands into the cold pit, sliding his fingers underneath the kit’s belly to cradle its spine.

Lifting his shoulders back, he raised the palm-sized baby out of the hollow and brought it into the morning sun.

The man knelt and lowered his hands to the flat grass, setting the kit gently onto the turf.

The mother rabbit stepped forward immediately, pressing her nose into the youngster’s ears and licking the dry dirt from its face.

Once the baby found its footing, both animals turned their backs and bounded into the thick vegetation along the ditch.

A Mother Trapped on the Marina Boardwalk

Miles away on a coastal marina, another animal faced a similar barrier along a wooden pier.

A female mallard marched briskly across the weathered cedar boards, five dark ducklings scurrying close behind her webbed feet.

Suddenly, the hen stopped short in front of a raised bumper bar, craning her neck downward over a narrow split in the dock.

A single yellow duckling stood trapped in the narrow vertical gap between the planks, unable to scramble back up.

The mother duck poked her bill into the opening, quacking sharply while her remaining brood huddled against her tail feathers.

A young man walking down the pier noticed the agitation, slowed his pace, and dropped down onto both knees.

Plucking Life from the Wooden Slat

The man leaned his chest over the wooden planks, peering straight down into the narrow shadow above the seawater.

The yellow chick stretched its neck upward, its bill opening and closing against the damp wood grain.

Squeezing his right hand into the slender gap, the man slid his fingers past the bumper edge until his fingertips brushed wet down.

He cupped his fingers around the duckling’s tiny torso and lifted his arm upward in one smooth pull.

As he set the yellow chick onto the sunlit timber, the mother duck immediately rushed forward, nudging the runaway with her bill.

The entire brood bunched together in a tight pack, chirping as they followed their mother toward the sloping launch ramp.

The hen slid into the grey saltwater first, followed by all six ducklings paddling closely behind in a neat, widening wake.
