A Dark Shape on the Driftwood
Sneakers crunched across damp river gravel as the runner slowed his pace beside the water.
A massive raptor sat crouched on a bleached log, its yellow talons pinned beneath a tight loop of tangled string.
The bird turned its head, dark eyes fixing on the approaching figure while its hooked beak parted slightly.
Rather than turning around, the man kept his steps deliberate, closing the distance along the stony shore.
He stopped two paces away, lowering his hips into a crouch to bring his eyes level with the log.
Reaching Toward Razor Talons
The eagle shifted its weight, leaning backward while its chest feathers flared against the morning chill.
“Hey, it’s okay buddy,” the man murmured, extending an open palm low against the wood.
With his free hand, he reached into his pocket and unfolded a small silver pocket knife.
The raptor watched the blade gleam, keeping its massive curved talons anchored to the thick cord.
One wrong move could drive those yellow talons straight through a human wrist.
He eased his fingers closer, pinching the taught twine just inches from the curved claws.
The blade slid under the first wrap of string, resting flat against the dry bark to shield the bird’s scaly legs.
Slicing the Binding Strand
He sawed forward slowly, letting the serration chew through the fiber strand by strand.
The eagle tilted its head downward, studying the silver metal pressing against the tight binding.
A single snap split the silence as the tension suddenly gave way.
The man peeled the severed cord back with his fingertips, clearing the remaining loops from the yellow scales.
He pulled his arms back instantly, rocking onto his heels to give the animal full clearance.
For a brief second, the eagle remained motionless, lifting one yellow foot to test the release.
Taking to the Open River
Huge brown wings snapped outward, casting a wide shadow across the river gravel.
The raptor pushed hard against the weathered log, kicking air beneath its primary feathers.
Its broad wings beat low over the rushing current, carrying it toward the pine trees on the far bank.
The runner threw his arms into the air with a loud cheer, watching the dark silhouette lift above the rushing current.
