Salesman Tells Modestly Dressed Customer To Leave The Showroom

  • 3 min read

A Sudden Strike on the Showroom Floor

The salesman’s hand whipped forward, knocking the crumpled wool cap out of the older man’s grip and sending it spinning across the polished concrete.

The cap settled beside the front wheel of a dark gray luxury SUV. The older man did not flinch, keeping his feet firmly planted in his scuffed brown work boots.

His faded brown field jacket hung loosely over a worn knit sweater, standing in stark contrast to the tailored navy suit and crisp open collar of the younger employee standing inches from his chest.

The salesman leaned forward, narrowing his eyes as he spoke with a low, clipped edge. He declared that luxury vehicles were not meant for people like him and ordered him to keep his hands away from the merchandise.

The older man met his gaze without stepping back. He explained that he had simply asked a question, pointing out that his cap had just been swatted to the floor for no reason.

Hands on the Fabric

Instead of stepping away, the salesman pressed closer until only inches separated them. He issued a blunt demand for the customer to walk out the front glass doors before real shoppers noticed his presence.

When the older visitor did not turn, the salesman reached out with both hands and grabbed the lapels of the man’s jacket, bunching the thick cotton tightly in his fists.

The older man looked down at the clenched fingers pressed against his chest. He calmly instructed the salesman to take his hands off his jacket and step back immediately.

The salesman refused to loosen his grip, leaning his weight forward as if preparing to physically push the man toward the exit.

Several employees in the back offices stopped their work, turning toward the center aisle to watch the confrontation unfold beside the display cars.

The Executive Steps In

Sharp footsteps echoed across the tile as a woman dressed in a tailored plum pantsuit strode quickly into the display area. She placed herself directly between the two men, her voice cutting through the space as she commanded the salesman to let go.

The salesman pulled his hands away, though his chin remained raised. He gestured toward the older man, claiming the stranger had refused to step away from the flagship SUV.

The woman turned her eyes directly toward the salesman, her face tightening as she told him to look closely at the man standing before him. She stated clearly that the person he had just grabbed was the founder of the entire automotive company.

The salesman’s mouth parted slightly. The stiffness in his posture vanished as his shoulders dropped forward, his gaze drifting from the woman’s face toward the older man’s weathered features.

The older man stood quietly, noting that nobody had bothered to ask his name or discover what brought him into the building that morning.

An Apology on Bended Knee

The female executive immediately informed the salesman that he was suspended from duty and instructed him to clear out of the public floor. Before turning away, the salesman looked down at the concrete where the brown cap still lay near the SUV’s tire tread.

He bent his knees, reaching down with both hands to retrieve the dusty headwear from the floor. Straightening up, he extended both arms and handed the cap back toward its owner, murmuring an apology under his breath.

The older man took the cap in his hands, smoothing the brim against his palm as the young salesman stood waiting with lowered eyes.
