Man Collects Cans When a Woman Claims a Forgotten Package

  • 3 min read

An Unattended Package on the Hood

A woman in a red satin dress stretched her fingers toward an orange electronics box balanced on the front of a black sedan.

She slipped the package against her ribs, tucking both elbows tight against her sides while glancing down the sidewalk.

A man walking nearby stopped in his tracks, his worn boots resting on the curb as he gripped a green trash bag filled with empty aluminum cans.

He walked directly toward her, raising one open palm to block her path before she could reach the corner.

His fingers closed around the opposite side of the orange carton, gently tugging it back toward the car.

The Confrontation in Broad Daylight

The woman tightened her grip, leaning her weight backward onto her heels and glaring directly into his eyes.

She raised her index finger, thrusting it inches from his face while shouting toward the pedestrians strolling past the storefronts.

He kept both hands on the cardboard edges, refusing to step away while shaking his head firmly.

A man in a dark grey business suit stepped out from the building entrance, holding a black remote key fob in his right hand.

The woman immediately spun toward him, extending her arm to point at the man holding the green collection bag.

She demanded that someone call the authorities right away, insisting the carton had been stolen right off the hood.

A Quiet Assessment

The man in the suit stopped beside the front tire, scanning the worn jacket of the young man and the heavy bag of cans resting on the asphalt.

The young man released his hold on the box and carefully placed it down across the hood of the Mercedes.

The car owner took a step forward, his fingers sliding into the breast pocket of his coat without uttering a single complaint.

He pulled out a thick, paper-wrapped stack of one-hundred-dollar bills, flipping the crisp edges beneath his thumb.

Instead of addressing the woman’s accusations, he crouched down low beside the curb.

He parted the green plastic opening, shifting a few soda cans aside, and pressed the wrapped bundle of cash deep into the bottom of the bag.

An Unspoken Exchange

The woman turned on her heel and clicked away down the pavement, her cream handbag swinging at her wrist.

The young man reached down, gathering the handles of his plastic sack, completely unaware of what had been placed inside.

He walked to a street corner several blocks away and sank down onto the raised stone ledge of a sidewalk planter.

Pulling open the plastic handles to count his collected cans, his knuckles brushed against the smooth paper wrapper.

He lifted the stack out into the sunlight, his mouth dropping open as his eyes darted from the currency to the empty street.

He pressed both palms together beneath his chin, tilting his head back toward the open sky as tears rolled over his cheeks.
