Can A Young Girl In A Wheelchair Match A Concert Pianist?

  • 3 min read

An Unplanned Challenge

The young girl pushed both rims of her wheelchair forward, stopping directly beside the concert grand piano.

Behind her, rows of patrons filled the balcony and lower hall, dressed in dark tuxedos and evening gowns. The pianist, dressed in a tailored black suit, stood up from his bench, gestured toward the open floor, and adjusted his cuffs.

He extended his hand toward the audience, his lips parting in a brief smirk as he invited her to take over the keys. The girl tilted her head slightly, tightened her grip on the leather strap across her shoulder, and steered her chair straight toward the keyboard.

Notes Across The Hall

Her small fingers hovered over the ivory before striking the first chord. A gentle, familiar melody rose from the soundboard and rolled across the high-ceilinged room.

In the front row, an older gentleman in a dark waistcoat adjusted his cane, his brow furrowing as he leaned forward. The room grew still except for the clean cadence of the notes rising beneath her fingertips.

Before she could finish the phrase, the pianist lunged forward and flattened his palm near the music stand. His eyes widened, his posture rigid as he stared down at her hands, demanding to know where she had heard that exact composition.

She kept her hands in her lap, looking straight into his eyes. Her voice stayed quiet and direct as she stated that her mother had taught her every bar.

Uncovering The Past

The pianist stepped back, the color draining from his cheekbones. When he pressed her for a name, she reached inside the small brown satchel resting against her knees.

Her fingers pulled out a creased, faded black-and-white photograph. The image showed a young mother holding a swaddled infant while a youthful version of the pianist stood beside them in a dark coat.

Years earlier, unpaid bills had piled up on a worn wooden kitchen table. Arguments over money had ended with packed suitcases and an abandoned infant in a wooden crib, leaving a sick mother to teach piano lessons through her final days.

The girl held the photograph upward so the entire front row could see the torn corners and the faces captured on the weathered paper.

A Place In The Light

The older gentleman rose from his seat, the brass tip of his walking stick striking the polished floorboards with every stride. He walked straight up the stage stairs, positioning himself directly between the girl and the performer.

With a firm tug, the patron reached toward the pianist’s lapel and yanked the laminated performer credential from his jacket. The pianist parted his lips to speak, but the patron turned his back completely and faced the girl.

The older man bent down, offering her a thick navy blue binder containing a formal music contract. A single tear slipped down her cheek as her fingers wrapped around the cover.

She turned her chair back toward the grand piano, set her hands over the keys, and let her fingers dance across the ivory while the entire auditorium rose to its feet and clapped in unison.
