Mother Deer Interrupts Landscaping Crew And Urgently Leads Them Away

  • 4 min read

An Urgent Interruption On The Sidewalk

Two landscapers gripped the rim of a black plastic planter, easing a tall sapling off the truck bed when hooves clattered against the pavement behind them. A female deer trotted directly toward the crew, stopping barely two feet from their hands. She stamped her front hooves, darted sideways, and turned her neck to stare back at the men.

The workers paused with the planter resting half on the truck tailgate. Instead of retreating toward the nearby trees, the deer backed away a few paces down the sidewalk, stopped, and looked over her shoulder. Every few steps, she paused until she saw the crew step away from the truck and follow her down the concrete path.

She moved alongside the manicured grass of the suburban lawn, keeping a steady pace while glancing back to confirm the workers were trailing behind. After several yards, she abruptly stopped beside a square opening cut flush into the turf.

Peering Into The Concrete Shaft

The mother deer lowered her nose toward the dark void, pacing anxiously in a tight semicircle around the edge. Two men caught up to her, cautiously slowing their stride so as not to startle the wild doe. She refused to flee, keeping her eyes fixed on the hole in the earth.

One of the workers dropped to his knees on the damp grass and leaned over the rectangular concrete border. Several feet below the surface, huddled in the shadow of the drainage vault, sat a spotted newborn fawn. Its legs were tucked beneath its tiny body, unable to scale the smooth, vertical concrete walls of the uncovered vault.

The mother deer stood mere inches from the kneeling landscaper, her head stretched forward as she watched his hands extend into the narrow shaft. The fawn blinked up toward the light, pinned against the bottom corner of the concrete box.

Lifting The Trapped Fawn Out

The worker in the baseball cap adjusted his grip, reaching down with gloved hands into the narrow opening. His fingers carefully slid beneath the fawn’s small chest, supporting its fragile weight before gathering its slender legs against its belly. He slowly rose to his feet, lifting the baby deer up into the open air.

The moment the fawn’s head cleared the concrete rim, the doe pressed her snout against the baby’s neck. She nudged the fawn’s spotted fur with her nose, breathing heavily over its ears while the worker gently set the small animal down on the grass. The fawn wobbled on unsteady legs for a second, feeling the soft turf under its hooves.

The mother turned immediately toward the sidewalk, and the fawn trotted alongside her flanks. The two bounded down the suburban pavement side by side, heading toward the cover of the tree line. The landscapers stood by the open hole, watching the pair disappear down the street.

Another Unexpected Creature In Need

Suburban environments often present obstacles that wildlife cannot navigate alone. In another corner of town, a massive great horned owl found itself pinned against the glass exterior doors of an outdoor shopping center breezeway. Its broad, mottled wings were spread flat against the concrete as it struggled against the glass frame.

A wildlife officer carrying a plastic tote approached slowly across the wet patio stones, lowering himself into a crouch next to the bird. The owl rotated its round head, yellow eyes wide, clicking its beak as the officer’s gloved hands moved near its plumage. One of the raptor’s primary flight feathers was pressed tight against the door jamb, preventing it from gaining enough lift to take off.

The officer slid his fingers along the base of the wing, gently freeing the trapped quill without pulling on the bird’s joints. He placed his hands under the bird’s body, lifting the heavy raptor up and stepping away from the glass entryway. As he set the owl down on the open patio, the bird shook its feathers, launched upward, and flew out past the potted trees toward the open courtyard.
