Man Approaches Anxious Goose Standing Over A Heavy Iron Grate

  • 3 min read

An Urgent Signal on the Concrete Path

The Canada goose lowered its black neck until its bill tapped against the rusted iron bars.

It stood completely upright on wide webbed feet, turning its head sharply toward the water before looking back down into the square opening.

A man in blue running shoes stopped his jog along the lakeside trail just a few paces behind the bird.

Geese in park trails normally hiss, spread their wings, or shuffle toward the water when a human draws near.

This bird did none of that.

Instead, it stretched its long neck forward, dipping its bill through the metal slots of the storm drain cover a second time.

A low, repeated honk vibrated in its throat, rhythmic and persistent.

The bird shifted its weight from foot to foot, pacing a short semicircle along the edge of the grate.

Reading the Bird’s Movements

The man took two slow strides forward, keeping his hands down at his sides.

His brow furrowed as he watched the goose tilt its head sideways, aiming one dark eye straight into the dark cavity below the sidewalk.

The goose didn’t retreat.

It simply took one deliberate step sideways, clearing a direct path between the jogger and the square iron grate.

Its bill pointed down again, like an arrow indicating a target.

The man paused, looking from the bird’s glossy black neck down to the dark spaces between the metal grid.

He bent at the knees, lowering his upper body until his palms hovered just inches above the rough metal framework.

The bird stood motionless less than twelve inches from his right knee, its head tilted downward, watching his fingers.

Lifting the Heavy Iron Lid

The man spread his fingers wide, gripping the rusty edge of the heavy drain lid with both hands.

His forearms tightened as he tested the weight of the thick cast-iron cover against the concrete rim.

He planted his blue sneakers firmly against the gray pavement, exhaled slowly, and pulled straight up.

The heavy iron grated roughly against the surrounding concrete lip, scraping with a sharp metallic clatter.

He lifted the frame upward on an angle, tilting it back like an open hatch.

The goose leaned its chest forward over the opening, peering straight down into the shadow of the uncovered shaft.

Down at the bottom of the dry basin, amid damp leaves and trapped silt, a tiny ball of downy yellow and gray feathers shifted.

A single baby gosling craned its thin neck upward toward daylight, blinking in the sudden rush of open air.

The Rescue from the Dark Chamber

The tiny chick scurried against the concrete floor of the chamber, chirping in faint, rapid bursts.

The adult goose stretched its neck over the threshold, uttering soft, muffled clucks as its bill hovered inches above the small bird.

The man braced the heavy grate back against the sidewalk with his left hand, leaning down into the opening to bridge the gap.

The chick scrambled closer toward the daylight above, its tiny webbed feet paddling against the debris as the man reached down to cup it gently in his palms.
